Hobart members - the organiser (Dante) shall be at the Hobart raceway (same as before) 9 until 10am before the Hobart guys convoy up!

    Plan currently:

    • 9-10am - at Elwick racecourse
    • 10am - driving up to Campbell Town to arrive before noon. Will make 10min stop at Mood Foods, departing at 11am
    • 12 midday to-2pm - Campbell Town rec grounds

Organiser believes that's on Bridge, Church St and at the recreation ground will be best to park and meet up.

Thanks mate, I think ledfoot may have sorted me out but I'll keep that in mind!

You guys are locked down at present, so my lazy kicked in and I didn't check for the 4th wheel today. On the To Do List for tomorrow....

At some point after your lockdown, I have to drop a bellohousing over to @GingerNinja who's in your part of the world, so I can put the wheels in the back too.

      • serk

I'd be in for a top mount turbo manifold if there's a group buy.

Looks like @GingerNinja s workshop guys have it sussed, see if they want to do a run of them , as I said, group buy cut price really isn't a thing on short orders as setting up for different flanges etc is a pain and nothing is done quicker , you just shortchange the owner.....So they may say fowgedaboudit as plenty of customers will pay good price out there.

      • Ahoy @heritage240 worked out that the bullbar owes me which I think is $300. Sound reasonable? Add on freight and whatever @GingerNinja needs to cover taking it to a depot or whatever

      • Oh yeah, I am totally fine with selling the one under @GingerNinjas house to you @heritage240 for whatever he wants to compensate for any time or effort and for whatever he feels like adding for me leaving it under his house for so many many years!

      • @GingerNinja Yeah, over axle, no dump. No cat either - Just a long front pipe with flare to fit onto 3" dump.

      • ramrod;c-156019 wroteI believe his car is a 1989 740 turbo which will have LH 2.2
That's normally true for an '89 740T, but OPs wagon is actually my old wagon and I converted it to 2.4 back around 2011.

I'm not sure what car @GingerNinja is asking about, so here's a more generic procedure if you can't run the injectors in diagnostic mode.

Pull the injectors and rail and put a small bottle over each injector, disconnect the coil (so that you don't generate lots of high-voltage sparks around open fuel sources), then crank the motor and watch the spray pattern from each injector. If you want to be even more scientific, you can weigh each bottle before testing and after, and the weight difference should be the same (indicating fuel flow is consistent across all four injectors).

      • @Angus242164 and @GingerNinja I've PMed you both, cheers!
      • Sweet! Might see if I can enlist the assistance of @bigal, @1971_144GL, @GingerNinja and others if it's going to happen.
      • 240;137115 wroteNo worries.

@robsta77 And @Major Ledfoot (and @heavy_dd if you end up being in too) - they do two different versions of the mounts, I was just going to go for the cheap ones. Do you have a preference?
@GingerNinja - did you order yours with Luxe Steer? And are you using standard style springs?

        @240 I'll wait for a reply from @GingerNinja before indicating a preference.

      • GingerNinja;111827 wrote Engine swaps aren't boring. All the details and new shiny bits are why we come here to read about other people's builds.
Cheers @GingerNinja , I'll try and keep it coming!

        Minor update:

Recently I made the oil drain for the turbo into the sump. Holsets are normally quite hardy, but being a journal bearing turbo they do require alot of oil. And they do on occasion blow oil seals which will result in the need for a cheap but inconvenient rebuild. It is speculated that the reason they blow seals in non-oem situations is due to running too small of an oil drain. Holset operating manuals suggest that:

"Oil return pipes are permitted to decline at an overall angle of not less than 30 degrees below horizontal. All turbocharger applications require a pipe of internal diameter greater than 19 mm which has integrated connectors. To ensure oil drains into the engine under all operating conditions, the return connection into the engine sump must not be submerged and the outlet flange of the turbocharger must be 50 mm above the maximum oil level of the engine sump pan."

Now keeping in mind that the drain hole of the CHRA is 22mm on the HX52, it seems like a decent idea to run a complete drain with equivalent internal diameter. So -16 it is.

In addition to running a larger than average drain, I'll also regulate oil pressure to the turbo to 40psi using a turbosmart oil pressure regulator (bottom left of the below image). And I plan on logging pressure with a sensor in the reg. I picked up some decent tools to do the hardlines (fuel, some oil, possibly manifold pressure) so hopefully they work out well.

Lastly, I found the timing belt guide!!

I was wondering why it had holes in it as it does, and the only reason I could think of is to let air escape from between the crank gear and the belt. If that is why, then goddamn Toyota I'd love to see a write-up on the testing or failures that brought that about. Interesting stuff!

      • For those of us here in Tasmania, most will know there is a never a 240 series from my house. Currently I've got Bruce Lee, which is a 245 GL in duck egg blue that I got from Mark at Berry's, made mechanically sound and now lives with a friend of mine. Bruce comes home every few months to get a bit of care and attention. Recently I purchased Verdi Amego, a 245 L from 1979 in a striking colour of Green. I tidied it up made it roadworthy and gave it away because I really didn't need it and besides, tucked away at friends house I had my latest addition tucked away for a rainy day - I don't know if it is raining, but the opportunity came to finally liberate it and bring it home, so I'd like to introduce the Sports Biscuit, a 1978 244 DL in manual with a mere 375,000 kilometres on the clock - sold new by Bessant Motors Volvo and maintained by them until they turned into Pride Auto where it was last serviced at 371,000 kilometres in late 2009. Just after that it was driven to Performance Automobiles in Hobart and traded on a new Volvo. I bought it off the salesman who traded it for the princely sum of $250. It is painted in fetching biscuit and has no options fitted, not even a radio, so I think the sports stripes in chocolate really lift the car. Anyhow I'll tag a few tassie friends who between have helped me out with a few parts @carnut1100 @bigal @GingerNinja @jackafrica @Major Ledfoot @volvodriverman and of course @Angus242164 (while not Tasmanian, has certainly posted a few in my direction).

Anyhow, here are a few pictures.

      • I'm sure it's going to be pretty ghetto especially up close @GingerNinja haha! But as long as it's functional i'll be happy. I've got most of the bits sorted/lined up in my head but in a bit of a crisis as we want to build the shed at home a little higher and insert a hoist, not sure where to direct funds first... will post up as soon as any updates though!
