  • Finished wiring up the driving light switch today, and tested the electric fan (using driving light switch to trigger a 50-amp Cartier ex-SAAB relay). Fan works fine on low and high speeds. I'm not 100% sure if low speed is +12V to green wire and high speed is +12V to red wire only, or high speed is +12V to both red and green wires on the fan…I'll let the OE Volvo relay do whatever is appropriate once it arrives.

Also messed with washer bottle…the original bottle with 2 pumps will fit in the rear side pocket, but my preference is to put a small bottle up front so I don't have to mess with running wires all the way to the rear. I ordered one of these 3-way solenoid valves, as I figure I can use the compact 1800ES/early 240 wagon rear style integrated pump/bottle setup with the solenoid valve. The valve would be triggered by the rear washer +12V to switch the flow from the front tube to the rear. We'll see how that works and if I can even fit it all in once the pod filter arrives (should be here tomorrow).

  • Got the block-out plate for alongside intercooler installed yesterday after the paint dried.

Broke down and ordered a complete Volvo 2-speed fan harness/relay set off eBay (USA), but still looking to source a few connectors and bits and pieces off a wreck locally.

The flex exhaust pipe I ordered arrived today and isn't going to work (not "flex" enough LOL) so I reverted to Plan A…used an off-cut from the 79 245 (240 turbo exhaust) pipe and two SS band clamps to join that to the 240 Turbo exhaust system (had to cut off about 10 mm of the front of the 240 exhaust pipe as it was flared). It seems to have worked out OK if not a bit ugly. May tidy up and install a cat once I have the car going and can take to a proper exhaust place.

    Painted Mr Squiggle exhaust tip.

Installed Helli driving lights I previously had on our 88 240 sedan…still need to wire those up and then obviously aim them. Ignore the wonky look in the photo - bad phone camera distortion. I placed them where I like them - centred on the inboard edge of the main headlights. I've seen some people put them way outboard, which I think looks a bit odd, and also farther inboard (mostly in America with the narrower number plate). Each to their own I guess.

Still waiting for my 90-degree short silicone elbow so I can finish the air intake and order a pod filter.

On a side note, Wayne's now looking for a new car (EV)…maybe I'll write some comments in the Bruces thread about that. 🙂

Yeah I did the loom a few months ago and originally was suspecting a bodged job/connectors on my part. All turned out to be just fine.

  • With reading morch_66479's thread I changed out the light relay , yep nice feature 👌
Also looked and found a spare bong relay bit I've already got on fitted it seems .

While underneath the steering wheel area I found this plug I forgot about..

Not sure with refelctive strips. Maybe the back.

Getting her ready for the NSW Volvo Club Show and Shine for tomorrow. Much Carnauba!

4 Hours on Thursday messing around with tailgate electrics. I had the LHS wiring loom out as the central locking had gone spotty. Turned out being the actuator self destructing from the inside and jamming. Wiper motor is not zero-ing properly so I'll probably need another one of those too.

    • jamesinc LOL this isn't my initiation…I've had other, um, issues (remember the NOS clutch kit that apparently spent time on the deck of the Titanic?)…lesson learnt!

Anyway, I reassembled my frame press and squashed both bends a bit. Voila! Now I have more than enough clearance thanks to my previous (and now possibly unnecessary) flattening of the pipe at the trans crossmember. Now let's see what kind of a Rube Goldberg solution I can come up with for the exhaust…a task for another day!

    • Well, the new studs and nuts arrived today, so I played hokey-pokey with the Classic Swede downpipe. Long story short it does not fit. It's hard up against the gearbox crossmember. Maybe it would work with the crossmember in the automatic position, but it's a no-go for an M46. Fark! I tried bashing it flat to get more clearance but it's still hard up against the crossmember. I'm going to reassemble my hydraulic frame press and see if I can use that to tweak the pipe up closer to the turbo to get it to angle down a bit more as a small tweak up top should result in a larger downward displacement at the back.

More of a captains log post again...

With all the kays it's clocked up from moving etc Sunday was a cleaning day

The cabin wasn't too bad but went over everything a couple of times with Autoglym as well

Now it doesn't smell like a 29 year old car Arrgh !

I actually used it on the suede part of the rear seats and it worked very well .

Other news I actually fitted the other rear spoiler with brake light , makes a difference especially with the dark tint as you can hardly see the
      lower one

I've got a couple of rattle cans somewhere as the front spoiler has a few stone chips so gently touch them up with some cotton buds apart from that ..... I still bloody love this wagon !

I was extremely tempted recently as a 6 speed box popped up locally for sale but hmm I enjoy the auto in this for some reason . Saying that using the c30 as a daily I do think what would the Arrgh feel like with 6 proper gears ..

Harvey , be careful down there lol , an hour and 20 minutes south from me ..

Yep I agree , I like the look on mine with the mud flaps
Fuel pump .... mine failed and couldn't keep up with the upgrades plus it was the original hence pretty old .

      • After catching up on @morch_66479 's 850 T-5R thread, I'm ashamed at how many corners I'm cutting or just saying "good enough" instead of cleaning every speck of grease off the gearbox, painting the driveshaft, and replacing every fastener with a brand new shiny one LOL!

I got a bodged solution to the upper intercooler/radiator mounts (temporary until I figure out something prettier). I used the standard 240 radiator mounts for the intercooler (trimmed off about 5 mm on the rear ends) and standard 740 radiator mounts for the intercooler, piggybacked off the 240 radiator mounts. It all fits pretty well, was simple to do, and looks terrible (but works). Also modified the cooling fan position (spacers to move it forward in car) to clear the nose of the water pump. Ready to install hoses, top up coolant, install downpipe and O2 sensor and try starting it.

      • Got quite a bit done yesterday. Had similar issues with the gearbox driveshaft mating flange as I ran into on the yellow 245 project car. The bolt holes in the flange were slightly too small for the bolts…so had to drill those out, then the diameter of the area forward of the flange is larger so the large nuts wouldn't fit…had to install bolts with nuts facing rearward. Not sure what or when things changed, but Volvo did some strange things with these flanges and bolts over the years. I think I also had to take a bit of material off on the recessed area inside the flange to allow the driveshaft protruding part to slip in there, but I had done that months ago when I was test fitting the flange to the driveshaft front section. Also had to swap the good original 1991 centre bearing onto the short M46 driveshaft section as both M46 driveshaft sections I have in stock had bad bearings. I hadn't ordered a new bearing - DOH!

Also got the clutch bled, wheels & tyres reinstalled and shifted car forward (off the hoist) so we could get the dash and interior reinstalled.

Today we'll be working in the engine bay on hoses, wiring, fluids etc.

PS: Yes, I could have replaced the u-joint and cleaned and painted the shaft, but I'm NOT my dad (thank dog for that!)

      • Still pretty slow progress, I'm in the last week of my current project at work so things are busy, next week I think thing will go quiet and I'll get this finished.

In semi-related news, the parts hoarding for a B21ET build continues. At this point I have pretty much everything except for a turbo manifold and turbo itself.
