Ah.

The Rust Clips - which, together with A Mess Of Butyl - hold in the windscreen on pre-1980s cars - have done what they usually do, again: caused the scuttle panel to corrode and make a horrible mess.

You'll need to remove the windscreen and effect rust repairs.

New Rust Clips are hard to find these days, so IMHO you're best off replacing the windscreen with the late 240 type with the single piece neoprene seal. You won't be able to fit the Mud & Dust Collectors (aka stainless windscreen surround trim) with this new type of seal. You'll also need to plug up the holes in the screen surround where the Rust Clips used to fit.

Yeah, was considering just replacing it with the late model windscreen, won't have the nice chrome, but at least it won't rust. It's a pretty rust-free car, I'm guessing the main cause of it being this bad would be a combination of a dodgy windscreen replacement as well as the previous owners attempts to cover it up when it started to show, just trapping moisture making it worse. Even the wells in the boot on this car are rust free.

Has anyone here repaired similar rust recently? how much does a repair like this cost? I'm guessing somewhere in the realm of over 2 grand considering it would take quite a large amount of metal work. Joys of owning a 50-year-old car I suppose, if only it was as untouched as my 244, I guess I can't complain, I've gotten away with buying 2x 50-year-old cars at online salvage auction without either having any significant rust.

There is also a pretty minor dent on the left rear quarter thats been unessesarily repaired with an equally unnessesary amount of bondo, luckily its not caused any rust yet

Hey guys,

Managed to get my hands on a parts car and I've started reassembling the kjet system, was looking at replacing the nylon hose for the injectors as well as the hose that goes to the fuel tank. From what i understand these are 3.5mm hoses. Ive managed to find some 3mm hose at Repco, any Kjet guru's know if this will work?

    Thanks for the info, going to get it running before i start changing hoses.

    Ive had decent luck, although after getting the kjet system working correctly i discovered the fuel plunger was sticking, so ive just ordered a full rebuild kit.

    Ive pretty much finished redoing the harness. In the process off bleeding the air from the brake i discovered the rear flexible brake hoses are completely clogged, so will need replacement for those.

    From there ill finish the wiring, i think the only things left of the wiring is the alternator and making the routing all neat.

    And then the final job will be the manual swap, which is clearly a must. Not sure if i mentioned earlier but i got my hands on a parts car thats been donating the gear for all this.

      1971_144GL hey do you still have those k-jet parts? If you want them gone id be interested in taking the bulk lot off your hands as spares for myself. Otherwise no worries.

      Maybe when ive finished the 144 ill have to take it on a journey down to Melbourne for a new bonnet. Havent seen anyone around sydney with a bonnet yet and the one off the parts car isnt really worth respraying. Too rusty.

        Don't do only 2 hoses. All 6 will be well past their service life.

            Roinik yep, ill replace everything, atleast everything near the engine, i dont want engine bay fire v2 happening. A fuel system with old hoses thats directly above a hot exhaust manifold isnt a great combination. The fire was almost definitely caused by old fuel hoses.

              I was referring to the brake hoses.

                  Roinik oh, you think its worth it? Even the clogged hoses are still pretty tough, they didnt break when i was messing with them, and on a redundant brake system i wouldnt think its worth worrying about too much?

                    Historically, hoses on the 140 swelled and that 1/8" hole constricted to 0" and no brakes. It's cheap insurance.

                          IT RUNS!!!!! and pretty well, seems rich and i cant workout the fuel mixture adjustment, i think it might be broken or something, although could be crappy fuel. Regardless no complaints! she runs great!

                          Took me rebuilding the fuel distributor. And then rebuilding it again when i stuffed it up.

                          No issues popped up aside from that. Hot start, cold start, all worka

                          If everything is working properly and there aren't any vacuum leaks (!), the mixture can be adjusted by adjusting the position of the throttle plate vs the plunger. There is a small hole in the top of the alloy throttle plate housing that you insert a 3mm allen key through and into the adjustment gru screw below. Small movements.

                            Roinik ok thanks, i tried what u said but with imperial allen keys.

                            I think i got it to turn slightly. Im guessing that because it stopped spitting black smoke and carbon, although its entirely possible it was just coughing out all the crap in the system.

                            Ill make sure everything is all right without vacuume leaks and such before i fiddle with it more.
