I'm looking at upgrading our family car to an XC90 D5 R-Design 2010-2012ish looking at no more than $30K. You're posts have been amazing to read, and all my questions answered in regards to petrol v diesel, never really considered the V8, probably due to old school chug chug thoughts. It will be mainly city driving short trips, but if the oil is regularly changed (1/2 recommended service time) we should be alright in the D5???
Also, i notice that all the recommended independent service joints in melb are sth or east, do you know of any closer to the city, or west?

V8 will be more thirsty on the city cycle but the end result is you don't need to worry about a lot of things on the v8 that you would on the D5 doing lots of city cycles
Drive a v8 back to back with a D5 and you will quickly understand

There is nothing near the city I would consider recommending
