Thought I might as well start a thread on my xc90. It's a 2004 2.5T with a sunroof, beige leather interior and 3rd row seats. It had about 126,000kms when I bought it a few months ago. It's my daily driver now clocking up at least 500kms a week. I will be performing most of the servicing and maintenance on it.

Since owning it I have replaced all the engine and trans mounts and given it an oil change. It travels well, smooth, very comfortable and I'm finding it very practical machine.

Here we are up at Cradle Mountain with it this weekend in my home state Tasmania.

Up to Dove Lake. Awd/4x4 vehicles only. We have 6 inside in this leg of the journey. It's too foggy to see Cradle Mountain itself but will try again tomorrow..

Amazing place to be in the snow. Few drinks and some nice food by the woodfire at the main Lodge afterwards is great also. Highly recommend a Cradle Mountain visit!

Check out this beauty iPhone panoramic shot..

@Philia_Bear Got no power steering fluid and she's groaning. This a common problem on the xc90's? Any particular type of fluid they need? Cheers, Al.

If you have a leak... yes
Most of the times i saw leaks it was from a previous accident that was badly repaired or not repaired at all
I think you need to add i was in an s80 with three wheels getting pulled backwards and was told to "hold on shit is about to get real".

Thanks. Visited autobarn and got some approved penrite fluid. Topped er up and it's the best it's ever felt since ownership. The constant whine/groan has gone. Must of always been low and recently went too low. Will watch the level regularly now.

Next task is to grease up where the steering shaft bit goes through the firewall near the pedals. Slight small groan from there on hard steering turns.

The bearings should be sealed units
However they used crap grease and they are forever drying out

Not sure how easily you can get to them without tearing half of everything apart
(Ive done 1 coloum on an xc90 ever and that was like 10 years ago)

L90 ftw for a replacement lubricant

Time for a service this weekend.. about to tick over 140,000km. I service my daily's every 10,000 as a rack up the kms pretty quick doing 500km to and from work every week.

The 90 is going very well. Very comfortable, feel confident on the road being in a bigger safer rig. The misus is starting to pinch it now over her car which is a slight concern. We've noticed just how practical this thing is as a family hauler.. The kid can get in and out of her child seat without bashing her head.

The hopeful DIY servicing task list:

    Oil
    Oil Filter
    Transmission Drain & Fill
    Check Brake Pads
    Rotate Tyres
Install 2 new OEM Hutchinson hydraulic engine mounts (in stock)
Check the Power Steering fluid since last week's top up
    Give it a wash
Work out why the windscreen washer fluid isn't pumping (I can hear the pump but not delivering).

Further note on the Auto Trans Fluid:

While the tranny is behaving well I'm going to do a drain and fill and perform another in a week or two to gently introducing fresh fluid. I've checked out the fluid colour from the dipstick and examined the service book and it's looking like the fluid has never been changed. I'll only be going with JWS 3309 compliant ATF.

Peneite full syn multi formula much better of an atf than the mineral 3309

Thanks. I have some Valvoline MaxLife ATF (full synthentic) which I bought a few months ago (2 bottles). I had to order it in and wasn't cheap so keen to use that this round. I am a fan on Penrite though so will give that a go next time.

If anyone is interested - This is from the Valvoline FAQ:

CAN MAXLIFE ATF BE USED IN VOLVOS WITH A GEARTRONIC TRANSMISSION?
Valvoline MaxLife ATF is suitable for use in Volvo transmissions that require the use of TIV or JWS3309 ATF.

Ordered a PCV kit from FCP late last year and finally got round to doing it on the weekend. Pulled apart and cleaned on the Saturday and installed the new gear on Sunday. No leaks and it's made a noticeable difference to economy and performance. Feels lighter to drive and economy average has gone from my usual 11.4L/100km to 10.4L/100km. I'm expecting the economy average to sit a tad higher than that as only been driving it 2 days since I reset the L/100km screen.

Also purchased were a new dipstick, new lens covers for the rear bumper lights as mine are cracked and busted.

A replacement 12V cap for the dash cig lighter that was missing.

Got a new front cam seal should it still leak after the pcv job. Will monitor it closely.

    Pics from the dismantle..

Next on the list is installing the hydraulic hutchinson engine mounts I've had for a while now. This weekend!

Is it possible to fit heated seats to my xc90? I experienced heated seats in a brand new nissan quashki (what ever they're called) and I was impressed. I now need them in my 90.

@Philia_Bear , I'm sure you'd know what my options are.

Requires re-programming by someone with the current software and a real dice unit
    Afaik most cars are pre-wired
    But otherwise.. its pretty easy

    New problem.

The 90 stinks of fuel. Seems to of occured after my latest full tank of fuel. I vaguely recall having this issue before with a full tank and it went away.

Checked the engine bay for the smell and it is not very strong there.. nothing at all really. Checked the fuel line connection that I had to disconnect in the pcv job and that's solid and no leaks. Seems to be wafting from underneath, strongest under the middle of the car.

Going to grab the extinguisher from the 911 for my drive to work today.

    Thoughts?

Looks like this is a common one and there was a fuel pump flange recall.. but not in Aus. Will research this further today.

Fuel pump. Check my post on this. I replace mine a few months back. Let me know if you have any queries.
