Probably a better expectation.

As for which one, the unhelpful but correct answer is the best one; it's just hard to get to the truth about a car's history.

Mike has already suggested the diesel is the best overall, but not if you only do short trips . So, probably V8 if you do mainly small local trips, diesel if you do regular longer runs, T5 if you want to spend less to purchase.

PCV system replacement.. Ipd have the complete kits. It'll be about $500 AUD I guess with delivery. $0 for my labour.

Hopefully I don't need a tranny for a long time so $0. But as of now you can pick up a used aisin 55-51SN for under 1 grand. There are rebuild kits for under 1 grand also.

Jeremy attempted to do the trans repair with parts sourced from the statse and failed. It may have been th e torque converter had metal particles still in it as it wasn't removed. Not cheap as you need to remove the engine as well so front end has to come out ( same for any car..)

Stop thinking about anything other than the V8 and buy the a nice V8 already....
Spend the $22k on it and doing 10-15k a year it will last for another 15 years without issue
Maintenance averaged out over 10 years is going to be under $2k a year

Fuel
15k year on a D5 is about 1500L or $2000
15k year on a V8 is about 2200L or $2600

The $600 a year makes eff all difference and the V8 is the nicer engine by far

I have a D5 because I got it for dirt cheap by bailing out a friend who got in over his head financially
If I had to do it again (and I will in about 12 months) I'm getting a late model V8

Mike, I appreciate your replies, and your help with steering me on the right path!! I guess I was always thrown away from V8's being cars that can drink, and that's why I always steered away from them.

I didn't realise that in some cases, that a V8 could run more efficiently than a V6 even, so I guess I'm thinking V8's from the old days!!!

Gee if only I could get a D5 dirt cheap :) I'm surprised you don't get really good efficiency, but I guess that's what all car makers feed up to beef up their marketing strategy!

Is the V8 in the XC 90 tuned a certain way to allow it to run more optimally?

Is the servicing most expensive because of the parts, or is the car complex to service for a layman?

I found a few sites online (http://www.volvopartswebstore.com/) where I could purchase many of the parts for regular (minor service) and leave the major ones to the expert/master mechanics!

I'm just not sure when they say brake pad kit, spark plug kit, wiper blade kit, whether that is the kit for the whole car, or only one individual part?

Who knows the V8 would make a man out of me even more! :)

If I started making bigger trips over the weekend, or the occasionally interstate trip, then would I still have good fuel efficiency? When would someone switch over to a Diesel i.e. mainly if they are doing big trips every day, and even longer ones on the weekends?

If doing 40k a year i would think highly about the d5 over the v8
I doubt your ever going to do that so v8 is going to be ahead on cost as it does not have a timing belt and the d5 does

19's are the perfect size on a xc90

Not sure what the high end chinese stuff available in Melbourne is

In sydney im running momo's for $120 per corner and they are most excellent
