You just missed a 3 for 4 deal on some Hankook ventus prime 4s. All 4 fitted for $660. Mate had them, seemed grippy enough.

Good to see another one of these saved and running around in NSW. Congratulations on the registration. Mine was initially insured as a twice-a-weeker and eventually ended up being my daily, I like it that much. My poor old much newer Benz C300 got downgraded.

I shared your pic and thread over on the Oz/NZ S/V40 Facebook group. The international S/V40 Facebook group is very active, mostly Poms and Dutchies but I've got some good advice (and parts).

I had those Kuhmos on a CLK500 Benz. They were pretty good.

They performed just fine in the rain in Sydney this arvo. I have been driving the car around to get a feel for it and build some trust, and it's been great so far. The engine mounts cause a fair bit of vibration at idle, but when moving its not too bad at all, you mostly feel it through the steering wheel.

Needs new front brakes and rotors, so I'll order some, rears are fine.

I'm trying to decide what to do about the camber, whether to revert to stock control arms.

jamesinc changed the title to James's 2000 S40 T4 SuperTourer .

This car is amazing to drive. It is worryingly hoonable.

This weekend I spent some time just tidying things up. I cleaned the interior.I went over the seats with leather conditioner and went over all the plastics with Vinyl Care which is a Bowden's Own product. The control surfaces were all pretty grotty. I also removed the various things glued to the windscreen and all the parking tickets that were wedged between the dash and the windscreen. It needs another vacuum still.

I think I will try and find new A-pillar trims and a new sunroof grab handle as really it's just these pieces letting the interior down, everything else is in reasonably good condition. On the outside I need to replace the trims that go up the sides of the windscreen and over the roof and down the rear glass. Drip rail mouldings? Not sure what they're called.

I also installed a cheap touchscreen headunit with Android Auto, which is working well and now I can listen to tunes and use nav etc. I bought this one: https://www.amazon.com.au/Eonon-Universal-Wireless-Mirrorlink-Bluetooth/dp/B089CNP54Y/

Having driven a loaner S40 N/A auto i wanted more power and manual!

Such a fun car.

The V50 just doesnt seem the same!

Johnno_ cheers I was hoping someone would chime in with a recommendation!

I've also got a line on some replacement roof trims, and maybe a replacement boot lid also (this one is dented and also hail damaged), but they're up in Lismore so unless I can find someone who is heading through toward Sydney it's probably too far.

And now that I've driven it at night I want to replace the backlights for the climate control and the headlight switch.

I've kept the climate control stock but done the headlight switch. Really makes a difference

Some 5W festoon LEDs in the cargo area makes finding things easy in the dark. I was worried it might melt the plastic housings but they seem to cope.

Man that boot light is amazing.

New pads and rotors are on finally. Pad is Bendix DB1223 and rotors are RDA7026. Thanks @Spac for knowing which pad to use for the Mitsubishi calipers.

Need to flush the whole system out but I crammed this work into my lunch break so didn't have enough time, will get to it in the next week or so.

The old pads were right on the limit, less than the thickness of a credit card worth of pad left.

Also looking at the Mitsubishi assembly diagrams I think the top/bottom slide pin need to be swapped. The calipers need a rebuild, the dust boots are falling apart. Future me problem though.

Going to address a few more things on the car in the coming weeks.

I'm going to swap in stock control arms, the extended ones give it a LOT of negative camber, and while it's super fun in the corners, it is hard to keep it in a straight line. I'll hold onto the modified control arms though.

The steering wheel is crumbling, and I somewhat flippantly looked up the part number on GCP and shockingly it is still available new, and even more shockingly it is like $130??? Check it out https://www.gcp.se/en_usd/products/30884415

Yeah so I bought it. I also bought a bunch of little bits and pieces that are missing, like the sill plate screws, and all the broken backlight bulbs.

Stay tuned.

PS I am absolutely hyped about that steering wheel being available new at such a reasonable price.

How good is the new GCP website? Much better than it was a few years back. Their freight is super quick too. They can be really pleasantly surprising what they still have but then disappointing what they don't. There's still some gems there though.

I got one of those steering wheels unused from Japan and landed here for around $200 about a year ago. Should have gone to GCP first.

@Johnno_ it is much better, although this part I found by looking up the part number.

And on that note, it's arrived, and I ran down to the garage at lunch time and slapped it in!

Here's what the old wheel looked like:

Here they are side-by-side:

At first I thought the new wheel was the wrong colour, but the part numbers match, and when I compared the colour on the internal part of the wheel, it hit me... they are the same colour 🤮

All done:

The new wheel looks much nicer and is definitely firmer, all in all 1000/10, would buy again.

Finally, I'm doing the timing belt and cam seals (front and rear). And, as I just now discovered, the drive belt, drive belt tensioner, and right engine mount.

Volvo S40 leaking front cam seals

Volvo S40 replacement front cam seals

The old seals were haggard. The timing belt is old enough that it's date code has faded completely.

Parts on order from Rockauto. I also just discovered I don't own a 30mm socket of any kind...

The drive belt tensioner is so cooked, it has lots of play in every direction. I think this explains a weird noise I occasionally was hearing on decel.

I'm pretty sure the service book recommends changing the water pump too. At least that's what I recall from 20 years ago.
