Yes you are correct, the collar is in the casting for the twin groove. Almost every one I have seen has a fine hairline crack at the keyway thin wall section. If yours doesn't, then take care with install that the key is sized to the groove before installing. They also appear to wear a bit easier at the seal face, causing a groove. I was going to try fitting an engineering speedie sleve or similar to solve the problem, they are very thin and though polished metal.

Are B20 and B30 timing gear covers the same shape? AFAIK, they're not interchangeable, but I may be wrong.

I've had no problem. You do have to fill one or two holes used for location dowels on the B30, otherwise it will leak oil. The late B30 already has a lip seal too.

    Hi there the Volvo brains trust!

    query on my 1973 144 ATE brake proportioning valves, these are definitely the original ones, just took them out of the car and gave them a bit of a clean up while the car is up on the hoist and diff about to come out.

    Firstly it looks like there is no maintenance able to be done short of uncrimping the covers and see what is underneath, secondly before I do that is there any form of test to make sure they are doing what the Swedish gods designed them to do? I have never had a brake problem but while I can get to the underside and get to them I thought Id just make sure they are fine.

    All the rest of the braking system will be new or refurbished

      Assuming they’re not blocked (ie when you bleed the brakes you get good flow to the rear brake bleeders) then they should be fine. I don’t think you can do anything to them. They are a sort of proportioning valve that prevents the rear brakes locking up prematurely.

        Harry's looking good Mark. As is Katie and AJ. I'm thinking though that your collection is not complete. You also need a notchback VW with fat wheels and a Datsun 1600 with Turbo and oil cooler stuck through the bonnet. Perhaps throw in a Mainline ute as well? Seriously though, Harry will be worth the wait.

        Hi there the Volvo brain trust ? always wondered why it was only old blokes had wicked cars then realised the only time you have to do stuff is when you are heading towards or already retired, in my case I just joined those long haired, mung bean eating, dope smoking Blue Mountains types as a ‘professional’ retiree, and NOW can put a bit of time into getting Harry back on the road…..getting a pair of mints Cibie Oscars to make it a 4 Cibie (2 Super Oscar and 2 Oscar) rally look certainly has assisted motivation. Retired yesterday ?

        Congrats on retirement. I took an “early” buy-out from Holden at the age of 48 and haven’t looked back since. Having said that, I don’t find much time to work on MY projects! LOL!

        Scary ain’t it, my pair of 144’s way back in 1983, complete with mandatory stubbies short shorts and Volvo t shirt, aaarghhhh

        the yellow one was a 144S,and had 68000 miles in it, and M40 boc, great car, the ‘first’ Harry

        The white one 2as a gem, 144gl, b20e, m41 box, it became a race car ?

        Mark , was 144PMG an automatic 144 ?

        I still remember going to your dads shed and picking up the 144 auto and taking it home to turn it into the race car.

        Below is when the 144 was still an auto and I'd just put doors , mud guards and got it going , at a VSCC motor khana at Wilberforce at the old butterfly farm near Windsor.

        The Bridge to Bridge speed boat race was in the Hawkesbury just to the left.

          The Walton shed was a place of dreams and magic. I spent many a happy hour in it. My introduction to old Holdens, VW, Datsun 1600, Renault 16, Fiat, Daimler and an old Fergy tractor. A teenage petrol-head wonderland.

            Jul 23 and I am still playing there albeit slowly, but that was always my plan, getting the 1973 Volvo Parts Catalogue was a bonus as I had kinda forgotten how things were meant to go back together ???

            I am now happy that the front suspension will be finished by the weekend, will then reunite the engine and gearbox onto the suspension and slide it back where it came from.

            A brand new engine bay loom and every bit of the DJet all brand new it should be an easy start from here.
