Yeah...
Might get 5-6k from and idiot at auctions though... or might only go for 1k
I'm in at like the 2k Mark, see what dealers offer for trade in...
Chris
I'm going purely off Redbook at the moment, actual dealer offers yet to be seen. And sure, I can see 1 d5 at 8k in SA but they are rare and almost always 10k and up.
I'm under no illusions about what my car is likely to be worth, but if I can't get better than 2k to be honest I'd give it to one of my kids and tell them to drive it until it drops.
Vee_Que
Unfortunately as much as I could fix it. I am not motorvated to spend the time rebuilding a motor for my wife's daily again. That being said, d5 v50 are off our list if the lexus is written off.

If the dealers don't notice the issue then it should be an easy 6 or 7k as trade in
If they notice the issue it's going to be much lower
Imho auction with a reserve and be pleasantly surprised what an idiot will pay for one of them
Chris
Totally agree @Philia_Bear I'm keen to see how it drives after being put back together. Before the latest round of unnecessary work (injectors etc) it was actually driving well enough that a dealer would probably miss the issue. After the work, the problem was more obvious so it's 50:50 what will happen.
It has occurred to me that auction may be the go, I'll see what comes of trade in talks.
Chris
Yep, still drives the same (post injector replacement). Drives OK for the most part, but if you put your foot down at about 1,500 RPM without the box downshifting there's a very noticeable shuddering.
Chris
Tried an Italian tune up today on Steve's advice. Several runs up Arthur's Seat. Sadly no different, but it was an interesting experience hammering the D5 up those hills. It was very happy to rev out to redline in first and second.
After talking to the better half we still don't really want to get rid of it yet so talking to Berry about a second hand engine or failing that maybe a bottom end and put my good top end on it. They're pretty sure they will have a good bottom end floating around since it's usually the top end people need. TBC but hopefully sub-6k maybe significantly so. Still cheaper than replacing it with something worth buying.

It could also still be in the head losing the pressure but not going through a valve
Chris
So, all being well, we are moving on. Put a deposit on an 09 Liberty sedan. Now, before you all yell 'head gasket' in unison, yes, I know. I'm getting it checked out, and besides I'd rather a known head gasket than an apparently too hard to fix diesel engine.
The plan is to sell the V50 to Berry (assuming they're still interested), who will fix it and sell it on.
I'll also throw up a few pics in the for sale section in case anyone here fancies a challenge.

How much they offering you?
Chris
Didn't actually go there @Philia_Bear my plan is to sell to Berry or someone on here so whoever gets it knows what they're up for. Berry was at $3k when I spoke to them.
I know you are likely to think I'm nuts but I don't want some unsuspecting punter getting screwed over.
Chris
And gone, sold to Berry. They may have a lead on a wreck with a motor so it may be reborn fairly soon. Find out today if the Liberty I'm interested in is any good.
Chris
The Liberty is good, so get it Saturday. Now down to owning one Volvo, the V40 my son currently drives

Want phase two headlights and the 2000' model headlights?

Shame, you could have picked up an entire statutory write off V50 from Pickles for around the 500-1500 mark, so for around 2 K you'd have a swapped engine and a sh!+tonne of other spares. D5's don't come up every day but one did a few weeks ago and I hadn't seen your thread.
Ex850R
Yeah but to get someone to do that it would come up to 5k including a motor.
Chris
Sorry, haven't been back to this since I bought the Subaru. Yeah, the last wreck Berry bought with a low k motor was more like 6 grand, but then the motor only had about 50,000 on it I believe. They wanted $3.5 for an engine like this. Sadly another unfortunate with a low k V50 D5 and trashed engine got this or I might have pulled the trigger since it was there at the exact right time.
The problem I had was my car was low km (75,000) and finding a low k engine for it was not going to be easy, especially since it has to be the right D5. Berry quoted about $6k all in, maybe even a bit more so Les is on the money.
As it stands I miss the V50 in some ways but so far the Scooby is a really good car, the local dealer has been good to work with, and the lack of ongoing dramas is bloody good.
ToomanyVolvos
6k, WTF. Stat write off V50/C30 etc go for around 500-1500.... Never ever 6K! 6K buys a running V50 with a few KLMS and 10K a super low KLM one. The engine swap shouldn't be over a grand in labour so whole job should be well under 3K with free transmission etc etc off the wreck.
Ex850R
Sadly no, here we have a wrecker that outbid/over bids on volvo that pushes out even our guys a lot of the time so it's difficult.
The workshop time isn't cheap.
Berry's don't overcharge or rip off customers and I've been dealing with them for years, they've helped me out heaps.
If that's what is quoted then that's the costs here in Melbourne.
Pointless buying a wreck from another state.
I've driven cheap v50, they are buckets of shite if not looked after and not worth the cheap price at all.
Chris
I can only tell you what Berry told me. The wreck was a C30 D5 apparently. Whatever they pay, their price on the engine is 3.5k, plus any ancillaries that need doing like t belt plus removal and install. Mason's and Voldat also said it wasn't economic to replace with a second hand engine. I figure they'd all be in the same ballpark, certainly at least 5k.
Neither recommended doing it. Voldat said drive it as is or dump it, Mason's said straight out dump it and don't look back. Hell even the Volvo dealer said pull the engine apart or dump it, and if it was them they'd dump it as an uneconomical fix.
If I was mechanically skilled, had space, bought the wreck myself etc then yes I can see under 3k. Even then I'd be buying a high km example and taking a risk for that money. As Les said, Berry and others get outbid, especially on rare and in demand stuff. Pushes prices sky high for some things.
