@ToomanyVolvos you realise as the supplier of the engine they also have to offer a warranty? It's not some guy throwing an unknown 2nd hand engine in it in his backyard.
Engine swap would be over a grand in any workshop
I throw 6k quotes at people for xc90 engines/trans all the time. People who do spend the 6k expect a brand new car for the money so often not worth the hassle

Fair enough. If it were my V50 I would buy the stat write off for a little either side of 1K and pay about the same to have it all swapped out.... And keep all the rest free! So there's something like 2K-ish. Of course then it'd be my motor and my problem if it's also an issue... Much rather do that than pay 6K just for a motor and fitting. Hell, insurance just replaced a 9.5K motor (which was a BRAND SPANKING NEW UNIT) in my daughter's C30 and the dealer only charged 1400 in labour including replacement of tonnes of other stuff with new (labour incl, parts at my exp), so 6K for a used unit is a no no when a good "smashed" vehicle can easily be had around 1K complete with a good tranny etc etc. If I paid 6K for a used motor I'd expect a 5yr/ 100K warranty.

I've purchased an absolutely perfect 60K C30 T5 stat write off for $1100 (fraudulent fake hail damage write off because sun roof leaked and caused NO damage), a V50 with damaged sump (rest of car perfect) and PERFECT motor after repair for $500, and two XC90's for around 1500, one with low KLMS and pretty much everything perfect except some panel damage..... The V50 D5 I earlier mentioned actually relisted a few days back and I'd be highly surprised if it got 1K.

You'll always have someone asking stupid money for bits, good luck to them. Only a fool would pay $4250 for a used motor.

It's like Tim said, if you can DIY it you can keep cost down, but if using a workshop I couldn't get it cheap enough. And the D5s are exxy if low ks, that's just the reality of limited supply.

I also felt like Tim said, if I was spending big coin I wanted it to be perfect, but I also felt it wasn't likely to be, so what was the point?

Average going rate of a write off d5 Volvo is sub 2k at pickles here in Sydney
Because you can't ever re register them... stuff that goes to auction sells for pennies here

And Berry's warranty on a motor is replacement usually. They do it. Great people.

It's all really academic, since I was quoted what I was quoted by Berry and none of the other indies was (a) offering to do it for cheaps (b) particularly enthused about doing it. Berry were most open to it because they do engine swaps regularly. If I could have got it done for $2-3k of course I would have, no brainer.
