Not a bad deal, is it a non-vvti or vvti?
The w58 is a great trans up to 300hp or so and a 2jzge in na form will make for a fun car.

To start with, there is a reason Toyota never put a w58 behind a 1jz. They won't like stock power, let alone a single upgrade.

500kw seems pretty serious.
You can't really get that kind of power out of a jz engineered easily. You'll need a turbo, manifold, ecu, injectors, exhaust and so on. All easy enough to engineer in isolation but not so much together as with emissions legislation the difficulty compounds with every mod.

Where as something with a larger displacement such as an LS you can make far more discrete mods, keep your ecu and make that power reliably.

Sam is going through all this right now, his costs, even doing things over time and getting things cheap, is still not very cheap.

Probably thinking that way from the 1jz r154 760 you drove years ago

Chose the w58 because I wasn't sure if I wanted to manual swap the 244, and upgrade it a little. Dellow conversion bits etc. but cost to performance is dwindling when it comes to the conversion, so I was thinking why not just get a whole new engine!
R154's are also expensive

Yeah the upgrades will be over a long time as I'm on apprentice wages at the moment. Just getting my upgrade path set in my head.

Maybe I'm in over my head and my wallet

Don't get me wrong I don't mean to discourage you, as Jay says go for it by all means! Just go cautiously as you may find yourself upgrading bits that you've already bought before you've got started.

Be realistic with your goals - a running stock 1jz in the car will be much more fun than a 500kw engine on a stand - believe me, I know.

If you're looking for a cheaper and stronger bolt on alternative JZ gearbox feel free to pm me.

That's a good point, you'd have to keep weight in mind with their formula.

I guess what I'm getting at is that the more power your engine makes with all the stock emmisions parts the better off your prospects are of engineering it. A stock LS2 in a 240 is far more legal than a b230 modified to the same power level.

It's not a weight formula, it's a capacity or capacity+boosted multiplication X largest oem capacity engine available in the target model.

Then the huge grey area rears its ugly head. Specific engineers signing off on it may want to see other things like brakes or reinforcing etc that others don't want to see

Incorrect. I've got the ok to engineer a 5.3LS with a turbo and that came from Vicroads...
The stock LS pcm is very tunable using Hptuners and can easily pass any 1980s emission standards.
With an exhaust and a basic tune the LS will easily output 400hp. For a light car like the 240 400hp will be enough for drifting and the engine and gearbox will be on a holiday.
Plus if you want to sell it it will sell pretty damn quickly.

I'm not convinced the engine will be on a holiday at high revs, with stock internals, you read about people upgrading them pretty quickly because the original motor goes bang. But hey, real world issues to face once it drives?

Rev limit at 5200rpm and it will last for eons
