Even Chris Smith bought a one family owned car and then did a full resto, as it's paint was not that great. Kept it an auto etc though. So I think it will eventually have to settle for a car needing paint.

The 245 wagon is perhaps less pretty than the 145, though that is subjective.
There is a simplicity in both, especially the 245L ( the coupe station wagon ).
A day to day driving experience of the 245 series is still possible. Not certain of the 145, it has become, more precious.
The 140 series has an undeniable appeal, as do the "first" of the 240 series with round headlamps.
For me, satisfaction could be had with either.

I love telling the guys on the porsche forums how awesome the old volvos are. They think I'm joking. Some of them get it though and are secret volvo lovers.
To me the 911 has a price. Someone could offer me a certain amount and i'd cave in and sell it.
However the 145 is priceless. I could never sell it. It is nirvana.

The only thing I dislike about the 245 is the lazy design of the rear door, using the same door as the 244, and the curves look all wrong.

No thanks @bigal , its a 164, its auto (I'm ideally seeking manual transmission, could possibly be talked into an exceptional auto), interior trim not original. Something nasty happened to the paint on the right front door. Bummer.

I do think 140s are still much underappreciated for their simplistic purity and as the granddaddy of our modern bricks. My inaugural Volvo ride was in our trusty family 144s home from the maternity ward.
Barnfinding and cosseting an unmolested 142S would be nice – I’ve been looking for a while now. If you pass up Mark’s in Perth, I’m next in line (I think).

So 40+ years on, on average, 140s are going to be rougher than most GTHOs, etc .
I've been trying to find a blue 1973 144 for while. A young lady replied to my ad on the Volvo Club of VIc website to say she had a 73 142 of the same colour I'm looking for, but her car wasn't for sale, and to wish me luck. Turns out that her car was on Ebay a several years back - a 4 speed, very low mileage, very good trim, etc and I've been kicking myself ever since for not buying that car at the time.
My point? There used to be a number of these things running around, now you could count them on one hand.

The resprays on Xoe and Chloe are bloody disaster areas at present, and I'm getting 'em re-done properly. Clyde looks the worst, but has the least amount of rust problems. The GoaT is another in my stable with a really crappy paint job. Why were all these resprays crappy? Because the painters didn't care, and it shows.
That would be because they are always a sturdy car and the paint always faded in the sun. My wagon is a good example, roof and bonnets clear went, it's been re painted and the mask line was the pin stripe. That. Paint is now disappearing too. It's not necessarily care, it's also paint quality and type of paint. Metallics are known for falling apart.
