That's cool James ?

I've now set the points using the dwell meter and set timing to about 18 degrees BTDC. Car is running nice, fanged it up and down the street a few times and it seems to have unlocked a bit more power. It also idles smoothly with the choke closed now, whereas previously it would splutter sometimes. I did also adjust the fast idle screw at some point.
I keep finding a bit of oil coming out the carb, and the oil I put into the damper has all but disappeared after only a couple of weeks, so I suspect (1) that the carb might need a new diaphragm, and (2) that the flame trap is blocked. I'll get onto the flame trap once I get some nice weather.

hows it match? I need to do the exact same repair on the BMW but i'm scared the paint will go all wonky...
jamesinc
It matches well. Having the trim strip there makes blending easy. There's a spot of painted on the boot lid too, right now I can see it but I haven't feathered and polished it yet.

Major Ledfoot
Thank gawd for sun! Nice work. (Oughta let you loose on The GoaT...)
UltimateDave
Nice work. Looks clean and well matched.
240
Looks great.
Is that just sand > primer > paint?
And what paint did you use?
I'm very tempted to do this to my 240 too (ie paint the black spoiler body colour).
jamesinc
120/240 grit then bumper prime from a rattle can (3 coats) then 600 grit wet sand then 3 coats of acrylic topcoat (colour match). The last coat I went super heavy, like borderline ripple heavy, and it paid off nicely.
jamesinc
The paint is Concept acrylic

I'm going to take Band-Aid for a pink slip next Monday. Because of HCRS I have to get a place that does hand-written pink slips (not many still do). I think the brakes will fail. The brake hoses are in good condition, I'm pretty sure it's just that the rotors/pads are glazed or gummed up. I'm wondering if it'll improve with a bunch of hard braking to clean it all out, but looking at them I think I just need to put new pads/rotors on.
timbo
If you can't be bothered taking the pads out and roughing them up a bit with sandpaper. I would try a few hard stops in reverse. It can work to deglaze the pads
jamesinc
Hmm, it might be worth trying that, given the pads are quite easily removed.

Band Aid is going through registration at the moment. What a fucking ordeal!
Two of the digits on the engine number are poorly stamped. They're clearly both 8s when you consider what numbers they could possibly be given the parts that are visible. Then the VIN on the drivers door frame has the factory digit stamped awkwardly, touching the next digit in the sequence, so the car has to go to RMS for some bullshit. I may have to get new numbers for the engine too.
Mechanically it needs a gearbox mount and an exhaust hanger, so it actually did better than I had expected. Tech said RMS is leaking but, quote, "it's a forty year old Volvo, of course it's leaking", so he said he'd clear it after it comes back from RMS, if I pressure washed the chassis.

Woohoo! Band-Aid is registered!
jamesinc
@Wino we did it
