Picked up a little something else while in Adelaide getting seats.

Hereby christened The GoaT.

She's a 79. Exterior has had a (very) bad respray, but the interior is mostly very clean and tidy. She started life as a manual and then a previous owner (not the PO I bought from) changed it to a BW55. :(

Odo says 248,000, but it's stopped working. The speedo is a VDO unit like you see in late 140s but I'd never seen an odo fail. (It must be something with that worm and gear combo - I have another r0.605 metric speedo I brought home from Canada initially just for the tacho, and the odo in it is cactus too. But the odo from Clyde the 142 - an W0.640 set - worked fine and still does. Go figure.

Her head gasket was iffy before I started from Adelaide, but she managed to struggle home. There was a couple of little holes in the exhaust at the start of the journey, which got progressively bigger - and by the time I went up Lapstone hill and got past the RAAF base, the pipe over the diff had cried 'enough!' and borked, so she sounded rather loud, I noticed, as I stumbled through Blaxland shopping centre en route home.

Exhaust and the odo have been fixed during the week, so now it's the head gasket, and then blue slip time.

Plans? A general tidy up, and ideally putting it back to manual eventually - if not, hurl the BW55 and fit an AW71; it's very noisy at highway speed. After seeing the excellent examples at Forster this year, the wife has decided she likes it, and so it may have to stay auto so she can drive it.

A suspension tidy up is also on the agenda, as well as one or two surprises.

Head gasket done. Big holes in head all fixed.

Went to take it for a blue slip, because SA rego.

Then the fuel pump died on the way to getting the blue slip. ***grrrr***

Anybody got a spare, good K-jet fuel pump they want to sell?

PS: Do 1979 models have an in-tank pump?
Thanks egads. Been through the parts book, and when it comes to fuel pumps for 79-84 240s, there's a plethora.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

There is a pump for LH 2.2. There is a different pump for K-Jet. There is a different pump again for the 240 jurbo and the V6, and then there's a couple of varieties of in-tank pumps depending if it's LHD or RHD or Great Britain or not.

A plethora!

But it appears the p/n 460821-2 OE pump (a Bosch 0 580 254 996 with a dork out the side of it, which flows a minimum of 90 litres per hour and minimum of 750cc per 30 sec.s) is long obsolete. I wonder if it's been replaced in the last 35 years...
Yeah, sure has, 90lph has very different applications nowadays though. Have a look on summit for something generic

After the fuel pumps died on Friday afternoon, my wife used another word...

But that will be soon sorted out, thanks to the replacement main and in-tank pumps.

Update:

The GoaT failed to proceed last Friday, and was towed to the place which was going to give it the blue slip.

However, one week later, The GoaT no longer bears SA plates, and is fully registered in NSW. The biggest hassle wasn't the blue slip, but getting the green slip - over 45 minutes on the phone to the GIO where I must have found the dumbest operator in creation. Finally, after much gnashing of teeth and jumping through hoops, we get to the point where I can pay for the thing... and, the call drops out (!!!) Was saving 15 bux on this really worth it, I wondered, as time ticked away on Friday afternoon at the motor registry.

Anyway, all done, and so The GoaT went to the first of the Sydney Friday Night Hangs last night for her maiden NSW-plated voyage. But it was not all smooth sailing - the exhaust broke on route, so the assembled group of Volvo denizens could hear us approaching for several blocks.

Ah, well, that's part of the joy of owning a classic car. Or so I'm told. This one is unrestored though, and she's going to need some work. The previous owners appear to have done not very good things, and these need to be sorted out.

Other than the exhaust, The GoaT didn't have any sound last night.

Well, now I know why.

It seems The GoaT's past owners partook of a Creative Wiring 101 course, so that's another mess which has to be sorted.

More work on The GoaT this weekend.

All the pretty little console lights now work, so that the heater controls etc will look nice in the dark.

But then I ran into dramas with the horns - they work fine; however, the tone ring on the steering wheel, doesn't.
No problem, I thought; just remove the steering wheel and check out the tone ring.
One problem: the threaded shaft sticks out too far for any of my sockets to fit on the nut behind the wheel...

Could somebody please tell me what size this damned thing is, so I can grab a deeeeeep socket of the approriate size tomorrow?

While I was 'up front', I also thought I'd look at why the accessory / fog lights didn't work. Probably because they're cheap and nasty noname knock-offs which aren't quite the correct size.

I had a spare set of driving lights to fit The Jurbo (i.e. the 87 745T), but they aren't quite right.

Now, @jamesinc mentioned somewhere that lights from the Peugeot 205 Gti are very close to the real, genuine thing which are made from Sweden's Finest Unobtanium, so I might try and get a get a set of Pug foggies to replace the dead crap.

Restoration continues.
I am kicking myself that I don't remember the socket size. Had to do the exact same thing.
@bgpzfm142 I have a feeling it's 27mm, as I also had to buy a socket specially for it. But that was about a year ago and I could be wrong...

@jamesinc two questions - firstly I thought those were fog lights not driving lights? And secondly what brackets did you use with those Peugeot lights on your 244?
@240 27mm sounds about right, I used a (IIRC) 1.25 inch socket on the 140 and 160. Thanks!
@240 they work fine for driving. I have them pointed about in the middle of the low beam and high beam angle. I bought a grille setup from @perko, but the lights included were rusting out, so I bought these and mounted them to the Volvo brackets. If you wanted to make your own brackets, it would be very easy with a sheet metal bender, as they are just a metal strip.

@tbro I did mean the one I posted - the mounts included with them are no good for mounting in the grille. Though beyond that all the aftermarket ones you see on eBay are the same - they're all Denji brand.
27mm seems right. I bought one, but could not tell you where it is now.

Progress is looking good Bob
Sorry I thought it was to replace the complete lamp, but what you say make sense now.
