If you have access to hydro blasting, I would suggest that over general media blasting.
The finish is superior cleaner and less destructive/abrasive to the substrate.

Coronas will not be magnesium! whoever led you to believe that is a lunatic. Magnesium on a road car is dangerous and never made as a single peice since the 60s!

Honestly, the 16 or 17" bbs mesh style rims are heavy enough to not bend easily and look good. It's a waste of time to use 14" rims from a tyre point of view as the options suck for Good tyres..15s are bearable. 17's are cheaper than 16's and as big as you want to go.

Only select volvo rims are soft, and they would be gone by now if they are so soft because of sheer time!

If genuine Globes, made by ROH and are a bloody good rim, in fact good enough that back in the late 60 and the 70 we raced on them.
The "performance" brand, seem to be ok, main problems were leaky rims, easy fix by painting the inside of the rim to seal it.

16" sucks for tyre price point and option for high performance rubber.

Contrary to what jay says, there is a decent range for 205/50/16 and 55s, in high performance road tyres, not semi slicks like what Jay looked Into.

But 17s are cheaper for the same type and brand tyres.

The OP expressed interest in Galaxys which are 16". And I know a few are watching for wheels along as well as the OP. So all this info is relevant. What sort of price difference in the same brand/type are you seeing... say, $30 more each? (No point the OP saving $ on a 'lesser' set of wheels, only to find the savings are wiped in 2 successive tyre purchases.)

I found as much as $100ea and as little as $50ea difference. For anything of not scary or detrimental to your health.

You can get 205/55/16 for $65ea though looking at the pattern and the way they are described. Leaves me a little worried for anything not limited to the local shop run about

I did limit myself with choice as I was after large block A-symmetrical high performance or semi slick.

For a 240, 205/50/16 is the choice. Re003s are $185 and in 205/45/17 they are $180, but other brands end up a lot cheaper, like hankook ventus or kumhos which are around $140 in 16s and $120 in 17s for the same tyre. You're definitely more limited for tyre choice in 16s as other style tyres just aren't sold in 16s now.

The chance of finding galaxies alone puts the original suggestion in dream land though. They are seriously rare.

Unfortunately the bbs rs copies seem to have dissapeared too.

Yes, rare. I was planning to buy Galaxies new from a USA Volvo dealer. Nice wheels, look easier to clean (knees & toothbrush for coronas). But few tyre choices today, means even less tomorrow.

Maybe these too... (Confirm with someone before buying if interested, because I think they're ok - but not certain.) 240 rims (with no spacers) takes 5x108 ET20 to ET25. These are ET27 which is close, but modifications are required if you go too wide too - and I'm not sure where that too-wide point is.

205/55/16 is a very common tyre size, and for a post 86' 240, the correct size. They are used on every astra sized car..... 50 profile uses similar.

And no you want to go lower offset, so 20 for a wider rim. Particularly for the rear.

i think we have covered the tyre choices a few times, if you want run of the mill $60 tyres, then yes 205/55-50/16 are a dime a dozen. the more you look at performance tyres and then track tyres. choices do get narrow very quick and price sky rockets dramatically

Cannot agree because you're thinking of 50 profile, 55 profile had all varied options from every maker, pilot sport 3 and re003 are common to get.
