  • 240 - Shitbox Rally 2017 edition

Hello ladies and germs,

I managed to score an entry into the 2017 Shitbox Rally.
www.shitboxrally.com.au
<which has lead me to rationalise my projects >

The drive is from Adelaide to Cairns in May 2017. Over the Oodnadatta Track.

A few moons ago I acquired an '85 240. I am looking to use this beast as my rally entrant.

I'll open this thread to seek your assistance in preparing a 240 for battle on a budget. And to show you how the build is going.

To kick things off, I acquired roof racks for $5 from the tip!

I'll be after tips on securing engine mounts, beef up suspension, battle hardening, raising, weight loss, etc

Cheerio!
How much for the rear headrests

Happy to share the love. Make an offer, they're yours.

We can help with decent suspension in standard height to help carry more weight/cargo too or even help with increased ride height if you want it.

As @Philia_Bear says, that car looks far too nice for the SBRally.
I don't know how strong those particular alloys are (I'm assuming by the pattern better than others), but I'd be inclined to switch to steel. It will add a bit of weight, but it's better than sitting in a pothole with a cracked rim.
@AshDVS @familyman thanks for your support.
Agree on steel wheels. I'm sourcing rally tyres from a gentleman in Yass.

The car is in amazing condition. 300,000 on the clock. One owner. Deceased estate, got it for $200.

Those alloys dont break

As above, the wheels on it will be fine. I actually dont even think I've ever seen one that was bent (aside from accident damage).
For the engine mounts, I think @egads is the expert on this, but you just put a ratchet strap between one of the crane points and the passenger side strut-to-firewall brace.

My first 240 had those wheels, I absolutely destroyed one on a curb while learning to power slide around corners, mangled it really badly. Tyre guy put a tube in it, it was fine as a spare. Hadn't deformed at all.

Might want to be driver side on kjet but crane point to strut to firewall brace is spot on.
Got some alloys with passable tires you can have also if you want some spares to put on the roof.
Yes! Would love them. I'll head up to Yass to visit you and Nathan in a fortnight. I'll bring the rally car and see how the engine mount bracing works.

Pic below was the Shitbox 2015 rally - love that tint!!

Awesome @egads - they're gonna be so much fun with rally tyres
@pfeffernuss how much do I have to pay to get a big Oz Volvo decal somewhere on it?

@jamesinc it's a Cancer Council charity rally.id be honoured to fly the OzVolvo flag. I'd take any donation. I'll let you know once the 'everyday hero' donation account is active. The minimum fund raising target for all participants $4000, so I take what I can get from all sources.

I think an OzVolvo visor sticker would be boss

Hello All,
The team is now officially accepted. Very excited!!!
The donation page has now also been activated - link above.

I appreciate your support in the form of wisdom and knowledge, but will also gratefully accept any donations towards our team & Cancer Council.

Happy to bear the OZVOLVO flag for this rally!

Cheers, Alex!

Quick update:

I have started my fund-raiser campaign in earnest today. I am doing a car detailing service for people in the ACT/QBN area. Clients get to name their price once I have finished the work.

I have had my tyres kicked in attempting to sell the 144 project - so you will see my 144 now in the for sale section.

The 240's starter motor has started to fail - a whack with a stick convinces it to start - but I guess I will have to source a replacement (reconditioned or whatever). I also did the cable-tie spark plug separation trick today.
