Groan, I cant find a loose hose :'( Wah!

well more fiddling here I go.
A torn or dislodged hose will usually also result in a shitty idle, as unmetered air is sucked in.
They can also make a lot of noise as the revs rise, as the turbo works it's guts out for no reward.

I've seen turbos seize or break shafts. It's not common, but it's the only way I've seen a motor suddenly and completely lose all boost that doesn't involve a big, obvious leak.
Oh gord.. yes I can't hear any vacuum style leaks. and idle is fine. :S

More salt to the wound. It's tome for fresh oil, Drain it all, reach for the new proper volvo one and it too doesn't fit! The Aperture in the base of the paper filter is to narrow to sit correctly in the plastic cartridge!

This is annoying because the LolVol is of course bloocking the escape of the car that works, the Reno*!

* I have the reno on permit this week to get some sh1t sorted.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUU!! :(

Anyway, that's nothing in the scheme of things if the turbo is toast.. Groan.
The oil filter cartridge is meant to be a tight fit onto the spigot in the plastic housing.
R2599, is the correct filter, IIRC.
Agreed, Volvparts gave me part #1275810, which has an opening to small to fit over the spigot,
Well it seems I was just being to cautious, it just needed a decent shove to open up the opening.. :P

Now. Time to work out what's going on with the lack of boost.
Yeah, if you run it while idling, and spray start ya bastard on everything, you should find it. Alternatively, I have a turbo hose boost leak tester.
Well I checked all the hoses from the turbo over to throttle body and all was intact, It was recommended by the mechanics at Berry's that I remove the inlet hose from the airbox down and see if I could actually spin the blades.. alas I ran out of daylight and I confess I'm daunted at the thought of removing the rest of the heater hoses / junk above it to actually get towards the turbo.

And now life goes on, I'm at work for the rest of the daylight hours until next Monday.

I need a shed,
Whoops, double post.
Not that hard to get to the turbo intake.
It was the Cat!

Cat had just shat itself, was blocking the exhaust good and proper. I suppose the ECU was just smart enough to dumb everything down? I didn't think the ECU controlled the wastegate?

Even with a partially blocked exhaust, shouldn't it have been able to make it's standard boost? I mean the gauge measures well before the cat after all. But I'm just showing more of my ignorance now.

Anyway, They pinged me for the Labour $88 they spent in checking everything else.. Hmmm

The cat was an item that needed to be replaced for roadworthy a fortnight ago. So yes something curious happened there... or it was an honest failure.

Either way. Happy Happy, I can drive the thing in anger now it has fresh oil, filters and plugs.

Yippie!

Alright I'll confess,

I'm one of the mechanics that worked on your car, I fixed that dicky rear seat of yours, replaced the cat and a few other odds and ends.

The cat we put on it was second hand, another guy took it off a V40 T4 we had out in the parking lot that very morning and we whacked it straight into your car. I'm going to have a guess that this second hand part didn't make it very far. I road tested the car after doing the swap and it seemed fine, so just unlucky I guess :(

Hope they solved it all for you, Ive been at trade school all week so didn't know anything about it :p
They did solve it yes! It's nice to have this junk up and running.

Ah I was just unlucky. I must call and thank them for sorting it without fuss then.

Oh, and thanks again for all those shitty jobs I left with you :S I was a little embarrassed when they were reading out the odd things I failed to check / correct before I had sent it for a road worthy...

So thanks again for not just pushing the entire thing into a dam and telling me it was lost. :P
Good to hear!

Yes thats the unfortunate reality of second hand parts, sometimes they're not much better than the one they replace :(

And hey no problem haha, its all part of the job, my pleasure and I completely understand where you're coming from! Before I worked there I took my 240 in for its roadworthy thinking it would only need a few things.... Almost $2000 later and it only just sailed through :open_mouth:

What didnt you teplace for 2k?
I could build a new 240 for that

You know what I actually cant recall, but it was in there for a week haha
These S40's are a laugh.

Watching the traction control struggle under the torque is fantastic fun.

1 week in and I'm hooked.

Quite, comfortable, enough power to make one giggle. Turbo's are great,
:)
Was always going to happen.
bowie;75188 wroteS40's are so cool.

My crush (Amanda Tapping, Stargate SG1) Even drives one in series 6 :D

That is an S60.. :)
Ah bugger... All look same. :P
So I was going to complain about lack of power at the top end, but then I found the reference to the output on the wiki page.

B4194T,
147 kW; 197 hp @5500
300 N·m (220 lb·ft) @2400–3600

Makes sense as to why it dies in the arse once it gets above 5500.

What I can't find is a print out of the torque curve? How much does it actually fall away there after?

Is a strange feeling coming from motorbikes and high revving NA engines. With this, all that glorious torque but with a dismal high end.

It's still a laugh however :P
Rear muffler delete will boost the midrange and top end.
In my silver car (no rear muffler, probably a bit more boost), it takes care to avoid limiter bashing when you're having a fang - it's still pulling strong at 6500 when the limiter spoils the fun. It could really do with the rev limit being raised 300-500rpm to keep it right on song after the upchange.
That's all it took, a better breathing exhaust. Well indeed.

I suppose he next question should be is these ECU's, how much compensation, well fuelling and spark adjustment do they have for boost above 12psi? (assuming that's the default position) Again I can't find much about these ECU's other then it's a Siemans.

I've read so much conflicting shit on ECU stuff that I refuse to believe any of it until I work stuff out for myself.
I haven't even found a credible figure for the factory boost level (hence my ambiguity in previous post). Mine peaks/spikes at 14psi, and sits on 12psi.

Concencus is that above 1.3bar is where stuff gets problematic (including conrods) but I haven't seen a clear statement about "you need a chip after 1.x bar" or anything like that.

FWIW, The Wife used to fill the old green T4 with 95 octane E10 or 91 octane dishwater on occasion, and the silver one has had a few tanks full of 96. It did drop performance a bit (particularly the 91), but neither car showed any signs of unhappiness - it's hardly scientific, but that says to me that the ECU can cope with a fair bit.

Ah ok cool. Yes I concur there is so much crap floating around, so thanks for confirming that I'm not going mad and simply failing at a google search :(
Oh I haven't had a photo of it on a road, legally with a licence plate. Shame on me. Presenting the angle that had me fall in in love with it months ago :P

RAAAAP!
They do lack a little up there. The VVT version pull even harder at low revs.
I think it is tuning thing to lessen turbo lag.
A my 850r T5 pulls a fair bit stronger up top but lags more.
Well fixed that crappy top end.

It's much nicer now :P

Those plugs look like crap.
Agreed. New plugs work wonders. It's like.. Magic :P
Those clips that connect the power to the coils atop the spark plugs, that then share to the other cylinders.. Fancy these things running a wastes spark setup. Are they a common Volvo part, i.e Can I replace the male end of the clips with fresh ones easily? Mine are only staying together on the terminal with the aid of electrical tape....

And now the engine warning light (which looks an awful lot like a Half Life symbol) wont go away.
I think the early models are obd2 compliant.
So grab a $20 bluetooth dongle and the free Torque app, you can pull/clear codes and lots of other cool stuff.
Agree with nicko.

Any 'ELM327' bluetooth dongle should do the job. Don't load the free software that comes with it unless you have up to date virus protection, mine was badly infected.

The free android app called 'Torque' gives good basic diagnostics. I bought the Torque pro version for a few $$ and it does have a couple extra bits and bobs.

'Genuine' volvo diag cable and s/w will be way better, but the basic bluetooth one is well worth the small investment. I have seen them as low as AU$4.97 on fleabay.

The other option is Vol-Fcr and a vag com cable. There are a few versions running around the net.
Those coil wires and plugs are made of crumble. Maybe common with p2?
Cheers all. I'll investigate. And I must fire up a parts catalogue and do some searching for comparisons.
8 days later
Well the s40 is going well. I've had it a month and lost 4 points of my licence. That's over a point a week. Tsk tsk :(

But still.

Hehehe ah its god fun.

But no more points please. I've had my fun. :(
Get a gps with speed alert
Mine has done a dam good job keeping me from losing any points in my bmw
22 days later
Well the GPS didn't help.

It's just the rush through that tall 2nd gear that got me again.

I have to be good for 6 months now.

Stupid wonderful Volvo.
