Hi all Long time no complaining.
Let talk about turbos. particularly when they make rattling noises slowing down from low rpm. What about whistling noises as they start to spool up and approach manifold pressure.
My pos is doing a bit of both. The rattle is the worst, at slow engine speeds, with my head in the bonnet, giving the throttle body a little sq...uirt leaves what sounds like a rattle from inside the exhaust general area..
Suppose it is time to get under it and have a man handle of that shaft..
Wait..

Oh I should have said, no extra free smoke, still pulls pretty well. Perhaps rattle is a loose heat shield and the whistle is just a split in an induction pipe..
There is a clue in the colour.
Pull the hose and wiggle the turbo
A tired turbo will usually blow smoke, usually worst when the engine/turbo is cold.
I've heard turbos making all sorts of noises, but never rattle - I reckon your theory of a loose heat shield or similar is far more likely. Also check the turbo is tight on the manifold, and the exhaust is tight on the back of the turbo.

Hi everyone, You know all is still well.
It is due for a cambelt now so I'll spend a bit of time having a proper look. when the spanners are out... or have someone have a look when they do the cambelt..
Did I tell you how great S40's are. It has been the best / most comfortable thing to punt around in. The fact that I haven't had to log on here and ask dumb questions speaks volumes.
VIV LA OVLOV.

Do the other belt and waterpump too.
Check the engine seals for leaks while there as if covers etc are off then its easier to do ( sort of....)

And while doing the Belt, make sure you replace tensioner and pulley

And check engine mounts and strut tops.
The list grows... Better set aside a proper weekend.

Well with some fresh oil I drove it to Sydney today. It went well, well enough for me to meet 2 friendly police officers of Victoria and NSW.
The glorious problem is of course in fifth gear, you need to be at 3,500rpm to have say 5, 6psi of boost available ready for those pesky hills and caravans when they approach. Then of course you are usually sitting closer to the shallow end of 130 then 120..
I was doing well too. Now my fresh NSW licence reads as if I'm a young turbo driving hoon.
Silly wonderful lump of Volvo.

Well I got to drive a 3cyl S40 Turbo on the way home today. :S
Hopefully it's just a dodgy coil. They appear to be original.
Whats the bet I've wrecked an O2 sensor driving 30km's to get it home :S ?

Sensor will probably be fine.
I appreciate the definite ambiguity to your answer :D

Yaaaaaay parts in.
Picking up plugs, leads and coil packs, can't hurt. Hopefully I'll have a 4cyl Ovlov, once more.

Ah 4 cylinders are over-rated ;)
My sisters V40 was down to 2 once, good times :D

SUCCESS! Reckon it was coil number #2, as the spark plug directly under it was wet wet wet baby, whilst the cylinder it shares with (#3) was actually ok.
I've never had a coil-pack die... actually this is the first car I've had with coil packs. I wonder if that smoke under hard acceleration will go away now..
Anyway, all changed, good for another 200,000km's right? :D
