Groan, I cant find a loose hose :'( Wah!
well more fiddling here I go.
Spac
A torn or dislodged hose will usually also result in a shitty idle, as unmetered air is sucked in.
They can also make a lot of noise as the revs rise, as the turbo works it's guts out for no reward.
I've seen turbos seize or break shafts. It's not common, but it's the only way I've seen a motor suddenly and completely lose all boost that doesn't involve a big, obvious leak.
bowie
Oh gord.. yes I can't hear any vacuum style leaks. and idle is fine. :S
More salt to the wound. It's tome for fresh oil, Drain it all, reach for the new proper volvo one and it too doesn't fit! The Aperture in the base of the paper filter is to narrow to sit correctly in the plastic cartridge!
This is annoying because the LolVol is of course bloocking the escape of the car that works, the Reno*!
* I have the reno on permit this week to get some sh1t sorted.
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUU!! :(
Anyway, that's nothing in the scheme of things if the turbo is toast.. Groan.
Spac
The oil filter cartridge is meant to be a tight fit onto the spigot in the plastic housing.
R2599, is the correct filter, IIRC.
bowie
Agreed, Volvparts gave me part #1275810, which has an opening to small to fit over the spigot,
bowie
Well it seems I was just being to cautious, it just needed a decent shove to open up the opening.. :P
Now. Time to work out what's going on with the lack of boost.
Vee_Que
Yeah, if you run it while idling, and spray start ya bastard on everything, you should find it. Alternatively, I have a turbo hose boost leak tester.
bowie
Well I checked all the hoses from the turbo over to throttle body and all was intact, It was recommended by the mechanics at Berry's that I remove the inlet hose from the airbox down and see if I could actually spin the blades.. alas I ran out of daylight and I confess I'm daunted at the thought of removing the rest of the heater hoses / junk above it to actually get towards the turbo.
And now life goes on, I'm at work for the rest of the daylight hours until next Monday.
I need a shed,
bowie
Whoops, double post.
Spac
Not that hard to get to the turbo intake.
bowie
It was the Cat!
Cat had just shat itself, was blocking the exhaust good and proper. I suppose the ECU was just smart enough to dumb everything down? I didn't think the ECU controlled the wastegate?
Even with a partially blocked exhaust, shouldn't it have been able to make it's standard boost? I mean the gauge measures well before the cat after all. But I'm just showing more of my ignorance now.
Anyway, They pinged me for the Labour $88 they spent in checking everything else.. Hmmm
The cat was an item that needed to be replaced for roadworthy a fortnight ago. So yes something curious happened there... or it was an honest failure.
Either way. Happy Happy, I can drive the thing in anger now it has fresh oil, filters and plugs.
Yippie!

Alright I'll confess,
I'm one of the mechanics that worked on your car, I fixed that dicky rear seat of yours, replaced the cat and a few other odds and ends.
The cat we put on it was second hand, another guy took it off a V40 T4 we had out in the parking lot that very morning and we whacked it straight into your car. I'm going to have a guess that this second hand part didn't make it very far. I road tested the car after doing the swap and it seemed fine, so just unlucky I guess :(
Hope they solved it all for you, Ive been at trade school all week so didn't know anything about it :p
bowie
They did solve it yes! It's nice to have this junk up and running.
Ah I was just unlucky. I must call and thank them for sorting it without fuss then.
Oh, and thanks again for all those shitty jobs I left with you :S I was a little embarrassed when they were reading out the odd things I failed to check / correct before I had sent it for a road worthy...
So thanks again for not just pushing the entire thing into a dam and telling me it was lost. :P
jaykenneally
Good to hear!
Yes thats the unfortunate reality of second hand parts, sometimes they're not much better than the one they replace :(
And hey no problem haha, its all part of the job, my pleasure and I completely understand where you're coming from! Before I worked there I took my 240 in for its roadworthy thinking it would only need a few things.... Almost $2000 later and it only just sailed through :open_mouth:

You know what I actually cant recall, but it was in there for a week haha
bowie
These S40's are a laugh.
Watching the traction control struggle under the torque is fantastic fun.
1 week in and I'm hooked.
Quite, comfortable, enough power to make one giggle. Turbo's are great,
Spac
:)
Was always going to happen.

My crush (Amanda Tapping, Stargate SG1) Even drives one in series 6 :D
That is an S60.. :)
bowie
Ah bugger... All look same. :P
