Okay so the distributor is in and a friend and I did a bunch of power runs down a street in Silverwater that @CamZH showed me, nice and level and straight and no other traffic at night. It wasn't long enough to tune above about 4500rpm so we focused on 1000-4500, taking on power bands of about 1000rpm at a time, and then doing a second set of power runs with all the ranges shifted 500rpm, to allow some interpolation of the previous settings.
Here is the factory curve (approx) for an 017 distributor, and this is designed to be run with +8° static timing.
And here is our curve, with +15° static timing. As you can see, the bottom-end curve wasn't too far off, but we really opened it up a LOT from 3000 up.
Plugs looked okay after
Pretty happy with it so far, it definitely pulls better than before! I think it would be good to get it onto a rolling dyno to finish dialling it in at the top end and get some power figures and more info about the mixture.
