Finally fixed the ABS issue by replacing the FR ABS wheel sensor harness with some pigtails I bought from Dave Barton (and a few layers of heatshrink)

Drained and refilled the transmission sump with 3.4L of Penrite Full Synthetic ATF, the fluid that came out was yuuuuuck. It was well overdue, I don't know when it was last done but not in the time I've owned it.

I'll flush another 3.4L through next weekend.

Can the filter be changed?

So the 850 has been spotting my driveway with oil recently. It looked like a failed oil filter seal, but I chucked on a new Mann unit the other day and it's coated in oil again. On closer inspection, it's one of the oil cooler hoses, the fitting on the engine side is leaking from where it's crimped to the hose.

I've had some truly horrible experiences with failed oil cooler hoses in the past, so I am just going to park the car and order new hoses now and it can be a curbside ornament until they arrive.

... and the radiator has started leaking too, looks like from the end tank on the passenger size. Cool.
You could always make up new hoses and/or run an external oil cooler
Years ago I got ENZED to come to the garage and make new hoses up for the 144R oil cooler, he was very helpful with routing and fitting ideas and didn't cost that much.

I was buying a gear selector from Jared Wilson (I forget his username) and mentioned I had a pretty beat-up centre console, and it turns out he had a really nice one, so I bought it for a very reasonable price. It also transpired that Jared's uncle was driving from Brisbane down to Canberra the next day, so I was able to pick everything up from Thornleigh Maccas yesterday. Here's the before and after shots:

A leather gear knob and new handbrake one next?

Old gear knob was grey plastic, which I think I actually like better. I'd put a new handbrake cover on, but they are very expensive.
Okay, the 850R has had more love. New all-alloy radiator, new oil cooler hoses, and I finally got the new engine mounts installed and HOO BOY the rear mount has sheared one of its bolts, and the other two were in by a couple of turns only. I am extremely glad my buddy and I decided to do them while we had the radiator out.

So with that all done, the car no longer leaks anything, and the acceleration response has improved dramatically, and all driveline vibrations have disappeared.

I am not equipped to extract the bolt from the gearbox (it sheared flush with the casing, so would need to be drilled or some other voodoo). Access is poor, so I've done up the other two bolts and I'll probably just be extra alert for vibrations that may indicate them coming loose again.

Hooray!
Getting rid of that rear lower mount, like the awd did, stick the lhs mount from awd subframe, or I'll send you my subframe! And live a much nicer driving experience, weird but true!

I've not had the best time with the A1RM pads, they constantly squeal despite numerous attempts to shut them up, and they've worn my rotors very unevenly. I'm going to try and clean up the rotors and run OE pads in the front and see how we go.
I have no fkn time for qfm pads they are trash

I've had really good experience with the bendix euro+ pads for daily driving and light track day use

Also if you want to bring the rotors over I'll teach you how to machine them
Went over the engine yesterday

Compression:

Which doesn't bother me really, the car has 330k on the clock so it's doing alright.

Fuel pressure healthy

Spark plugs clean but evidence of lean running. I have a set of Volvo plugs I will install once I get them, so I can compare. I'm running iridium 7s currently.
James, I think I have a shift knob that would match the color of your console, if you're interested. Send me a PM with your email and I'll send you some pictures. Wagon looks great!
Minty had this acceleration clunk going on recently, and I checked the mounts and they were okay, driveshafts were okay, no misfire or anything like that. Today I was over at @CamZH's picking up some parts and he mentioned a rubber pad that sits on the subframe on the passenger side, and sure enough on my car it's missing! Volvo part #3507606, Item #3 in the below diagram:

This was giving the engine a lot of room to wobble left/right, and the bottom of the gearbox was banging on the subframe where the pad should have been. Cam happened to have a spare subframe lying around, so we pulled one from that and installed it, and the vibration is basically all gone. I think it might have been rocking around so much that it's damaged the right hand mount (the one below the timing belt) so I'll check that soon but otherwise the issue is largely resolved.

Replaced the strut tops and spring seats and associated hardware, along with the driver's side control arm today. The old ones weren't super boned, but the front end has tightened up a bit, and it no longer makes a creaking noise at hard right lock.
I've got some rhs lower mounts sitting here.
Gimme a price.

So the wagon has just been an absolute dickhead to me lately, I've got the rust issue around the windscreen, the heater core is leaking, and the RF ABS issue has returned (perhaps my repair wire has fatigued).

So this morning I'm ordering new parts for the me rear half of the cooling system (front half being new already), I've got @Ghettobird hooking me up with some body offcuts from a V70, I've hooked up a 15A circuit in the garage for the welder, I still need to buy new trim clips and rails from GCP, and seeing as I'm here, fuck it, I'll rent a booth and repaint the entire car in a 2K base/clear.

I'm thinking of selling it, but I don't want to sell it with all these problems, as it will make me unhappy, and also no one will (rightly) want to pay more than pocket change for the wagon.
It could be worth over15K then!?
Going by others I see for sale.
Yet, Iceton will still be able to buy thede rare cars for nothing! The tin arse
I wonder if I've got a new heater core sitting in the shed....
Got a couple of bits for Minty. Replaced the left side plastic trim in the boot:

You may notice the new panel does not have holes for the cargo cover. Oh well, I had no intention of adding a cargo cover anyway, it would interfere with the subwoofer.

And replaced this broken steering column binnacle that someone had previously glued bolts to, I guess to use as spacers?

Noice!
Can still get new plastics?
Ex850R;c-156823 wroteCan still get new plastics?
Yup, a lot of them are in production again via GCP
I wonder what a whole set costs...
I have an 850R wagon sitting in my garage which was one of your at one time James. I'm not sure why you sold it at the time as it's a lovely car and still going great, partly as a result of your contribution to keeping her roadworthy. My personal opinion would be that you should keep her/him and keep going with the project......which never really ends anyway, always something to do. In the words of the currently popular Marie Kondo: The objects you decide to keep, the ones that gave you the spark of joy? :)
@94_850_t5 oh I wondered where my old wagon was these days!

Yeah I have more or less decided to sort out the issues with this one and get it up to a standard I'm happy with.

To that end, tonight I replaced the heater core, hard lines, and both hoses, and the lower rad hose, and flushed the coolant system with good concentrate and distilled water. Heater no longer smells like coolant, woohoo
How good would it have been if the heater core could have been a full metal unit with no chance of cracking or blowing out. Would have saved me at least 4 occasions of mopping out and drying passenger side foot wells :anguished:
Still, great car even after 25 years! Keep up the good work!
All metal units crack and blow out all the time
Considering effort and ease of the 850 solutions it's pretty good
And using a quality core means no issues.

Fixed the ABS again. The front right cable failed in another place. When I pulled it out I found it has evidence of four separate patches!

I used the Volvo kit and spliced it up near the loom channel at the top of the engine bay. Job done.

Also changed the fuel filter.

So I had it, the A1RM pads are just a massive nuisance they never stop squealing and they've worn my rotors very unevenly. There were all sorts of bits and pieces in the exposed parts of the pad, like the pad material wasn't ground up enough. I don't know, or care, but I won't be buying them again. I have now a set of ATE pads and I took the rotors over to Mike's where we cleaned them up finishing around 24.2mm thickness (26mm new, 23mm replace) so not a total loss at least.

The boost was getting out! I ordered a new ICV outlet hose ages ago seeing that mine was fairly hard, didn't realise it had in the interim exploded entirely. That explains the crappy power. All fixed now

So I pulled the dash because I had to fix an a/c flap and also some rattles. I found a Nokia car phone speaker cable-tied to the steering column! Vintage.

Also found all mounts busted, so I've started repairing them. While that was happening I replaced the Kumhos with RE003s, so I'm running those on all four wheels now.

So I'm fabricating new mount brackets for them. They are varying degrees of shattered. I managed to find most of the pieces and super glue them together so at least I have a good template for the new mounts.

I also found this module, does that mean the car is setup for remote central locking and it's just the fob that I'm missing?

Yes it does . You need this kind of fob with that board and no need to program the fob either . I found that board in my spares car , plugged it in mine then tried the fob and worked straight away .
