Hi folks,
I got a whining sound from my car. It's only under load and it's a little bit worse when the engine is cold. Sound seems to increase with rpm. I have swapped turbo and the noise is still there.
Anyone have any suggestion what it can be?
My thoughts are:
*Turbo is not on properly (leak under the clamp band?)
*Serpentine belt tensioner.
*Alternator
*Exhaust leak
*power steering pump
Depends on when the whine happens or when it gets worse.
I'd guess Serpentine belt tensioner. However, if its quite bad when lots of steering lock is applied, I'd guess ps pump.
I'll try to take the belt of to see if the sound is still there. If it is it might be serpentine belt tensioner or ps pump....
I'll try to get a video of the sound
A new tensioner in mine seems to be a bit noisy like this , I squirted some WD type oil spray at it and its fine. Will have a good look when I do the belts though.
Oil sump 'O' rings will give you lower pressure to the cams so they will be "ticking" .
I would think that the turbo would be dead pretty quickly if not getting oil , it actually doesnt get a big flow anyway.
I am thinking the tensioner or pump. Or PS pump?
Had the belt of and the noise is still there. Starting to worry that it could something inside the engine. I did the valve stem seals last year and had the valve cover off....
Do torque converters ever make that sort of noise? It kind of has the right pitch for cavitation. It sounds too low-pitch to be an engine component. Bearings and that tend to have a much higher pitch whine.
Could be water pump turbine maybe? That runs off the timing belt in the whiteblocks, doesn't it?
That sounds like the compressor wheel in your turbo is hitting the housing. I had a 15g make that noise but only when cold. It would go away after about 15 minutes and become a dull whine. Yours is making the same siren sound. Get the intake pipe off and check for in and out play. If its excessive then it will need a rebuild.
