Hey everyone, I recently bought a naturally aspirated, 1994 Volvo 940 GL wagon (now named Hilda) and I’m in love with it. There’s not a single thing I don’t love about this car. That being said, there’s definitely some things I’d like to do to Hilda to make her life a little easier.
What do I want out of Hilda?
Ultimately, I want to keep Hilda mostly stock. She’s in such good condition as is, that there’s not a whole lot more I could want. To keep things short, I want this Swedemobile to stay alive and enjoy its retirement. I’m not looking to make crazy power (she’s a cruiser), and I’m not looking to make her into something she’s not. I just want the engine to have as easy a time as possible making reliable power, and to keep the interior mostly stock, but clean.
Ideas so far
From what I’ve read in forums, heard from other Volvo lovers, and have learnt before buying, there are a few things I think I’d like to do. I’ve heard that swapping out the anaemic M cam for something else (like a K cam) can help. I’ve seen that getting a better in-tank fuel pump helps when getting up to speed. I’ve also read somewhere that a wider exhaust and a set of headers helps the exhaust flow better as well. Are these the right kind of modifications given what I’m looking for? What other supporting modifications do I need if needed?
In terms of interior, I’d love to get my hands on a six-track CD changer to go along with my Volvo CR-905, and I’d really like to modernise the speakers in my car whilst still retaining an all original look. If there’s any other optional extras available when the car was sold, I WANT ‘EM!
Other Advice
Though I’ve done a good deal of research on Redblocks, I’m still new to this. I’d love to hear what you all think and if you have any ideas on what else I could do to help Hilda live out her retirement in peace. If you have any questions for me, ask away!
