Just wondering what parts from a 1988 240 gl are interchangeable with other models e.g. 740, 850, 940. If there are any, then what parts would actually be an upgrade for a 240?
Interchangeable parts for the 240?
Parts for the 240 were engineered for the 240 by Volvo. Which is generally the best for the vehicle
There are a handful of parts that fit from a 740 or 940, mostly engine mechanical and electrical.
Not much else
The only ones I can think of are from a 700/900.
As a "bolt-in" you could opt for a newer starter, alternator or aircon compressor as they can be quite a bit smaller in size/more powerful/more efficient.
Otherwise most upgrades would require some sort of modification to fit, for example STS Machining make a centre support bearing adapter so you can fit one from a 700/900 to a 200 as they are a bit sturdier. From memory it is possible to fit 740 front suspension/coilovers to a 240 but I can't remember who makes the adapter kit.
700/900 used a better tailshaft centre support bearing and retainer, they were used on the Group A 240T racecars.
Engines are pretty much the same as the 240s of that year model (740/940 have head mounted distributors but the head castings are the same).
700/900 gearboxes have different shifter mechanisms to 240 (different body requirements).
Other than the engine, i can’t think of any general parts from a 240 that are the same as a 700/900.
Maybe there’s something very specific like a relay, or tie rod end but they changed all the part numbers to the new models.
The 900 to 850 reveals more carryovers.
Part 969019 fits the following models, and annoyingly is NLA. It's a stud-mount cable tie for the firewall harness.
Awesome find @jamesinc
The big one is wheels. 700 & 900 wheels fit, and often look great.
Later model wheels can fit though spacers are required to achieve the correct offset.
I think the 740 clear side indicators would fit, never tried it. They could be a cool upgrade. Peel off the Volvo badge on the front guards and fit them in the holes there. Wiring would not be too hard. I think the 90+ 240 models had them.
Rear brake calipers from an 850 fit a 240. I have a set on one of mine, generally because 850 calipers are younger and more available. They are a touch different, I think the hard line had to be bent a little though otherwise a straight bolt on. Just a brake caliper though, no performance improvement.
