The only downside is that the full-size BBS spare wheel doesn't actually fit under the boot floor (the photos were taken before I put the spare in).

I think I will try and find the correct space-saver. I'll hold onto the alloy so it stays with the car but it's pretty beat up and curb-rashed so I don't feel too bad about it.

I have a wheel, but it has a stupidly oversized tyre on it.
Original is 175/65R15 so easily acquired.

GCP is sometimes disappointing and other times surprising. $137 for the pair landed in Australia$ 57 of that is freight which is to be expected considering their bulk. That's not too bad.

I've spent quite a bit of time getting my cargo area in order (including some bits from Nathan). It had been really abused in its previous life.

Next time I visit , if you'd be so kind, I'd like to see if they slot in to the cargo liner.

I had an issue with the power antenna not moving (it's a new mast), which I traced to the headunit supplying a constant 12V to the antenna circuit at all times. I got the antenna retracted and then disconnected the plug.

Around this time, I also had an issue with parasitic battery drain starting around the same time.

These symptoms to me suggested something along the lines of a power transistor inside the headunit failing in a low impedance state. I opened the HU up to investigate and sure enough we see scorched components.

I'm not going to try and repair it, these SMD components are too small-scale for my soldering equipment. If anyone would like to have a go, you can have the headunit for free. I think I'm going to chalk this one up to buying the cheapest headunit on AliExpress and receiving the cheapest headunit on AliExpress.

M07 according to datasheets is a power diode, and 3407A is a MOSFET.

Either way they have obviously seen too much current. It's possible they are simply undersize for the current draw of the S40's antenna mast control input.

I found more problems with the circuit that were affecting the audio outputs, in the end I decided to just replace the headunit completely.

Unrelated, I'm thinking of selling the S40 if anyone is interested. It's been loads of fun but it's one car too many for me.

Well had a scare the other night, thought I'd blown the head gasket, but it turns out it was just a popped charge air pipe, the coupling positioned between the radiator and the block i.e. the one that is a real arm-twister to get a spanner on, especially from above. Tightened it back up and car seems to be happy once more 😅

I should actually try and sell this car already.

I replaced the coolant temp sender the other day, the old one was reading about 15% higher resistance than the new one. I've also replaced a bunch of missing plastic rivets around the lower body trim.

Otherwise I've just been driving the car! It's still loads of fun 😃

Ticked off another maintenance item, the brake master was weeping fluid, fortunately it turned out to be simple, the front seal between the reservoir and the master cylinder was totally shot. Fresh set of seals installed and I took the opportunity to clean the reservoir thoroughly.

During this I disconnected the hose to the clutch master and now it won't seal again. This is some proprietary hose coupler that I don't understand. I can get a new hose from GCP for $notmuch but seems like I'll have to leave the car parked for another week while I wait for it. After that I'll do a full flush of the brakes and clutch as the fluid looked pretty average.

Well it took ages because FedEx lost the parcel in Europe for a solid week but the world's stupidest hose has now been replaced and all is well in brake and clutch land 👌
