Regan Tiding up some loose ends on my 1976 240 before roadworthy. Will be making a write up about the finished result soon. Has had a open door respray and some other miscellaneous work done. Mechanically the car is in great condition besides its very loud fuel pump. The car has a less than favorable idle which leads me to believe the winy fuel pump is on the way out. I've seen someone use a Bosch 580 464 126 but does it have enough pressure? What pumps would you lot recommend as a replacement?
jamesinc Oh sorry haha, it's in the title and everything. I used the 126 pump in my '77 but it also has a lift pump. But as I understand it, the early single pump setups have the fuel outlet on the side of the tank at the buttom, so the 126 pump should work for you too.
Major Ledfoot Pre-78 tanks on unmodified cars are single pumps setups for FI (K-Jet). The carb cars use a different tank. Both types of these early tanks have an internal fuel filter - it's behind the huge brass plug with the large square drive-like socket in it - and internal plumbing. Replacing the OE K-Jet pump means doing a little bit of external re-plumbing.
delorean_mine Major Ledfoot Do you happen to know where I could find some examples of that? I'm in the same position as the OP and most likely need to upgrade my single pump setup to something else.
Major Ledfoot delorean_mine For examples of re-plumbing using a single pump, see this thread, post 11 by DCW242 - https://ozvolvo.org/d/11716-11716/11 He uses a Bosch 0 580 464 126 in place of the unobtainable original K-Jet min pump. Or do you mean the service bulletin for the USA, which showed the 'how-to' on changing out the early tanks because of vapor lock problems? http://hiperformanceautoservice.com/images/SB_Grp.24_No.17%20Fuel%20Tank%20'74-'78.pdf (As you know, US market cars were all FI / K-Jet after circa 1972 because smog laws and ULP, so their late 140/164 & 240 never got carbies after that. The tanks and tank parts used in that retrofit were used until the end of 240 production).
dmc Easiest option would be sourcing a post 78 tank and sender. It is a simple and neat arrangement with the lift pump and filter sock. fwiw, VPW have the kjet pumps in stock, i was looking for one over the weekend and not many in stock anywhere.
Regan Major Ledfoot that's the post I was referring too. I did end up buying that particular pump. Will report back once in. Will also see what condition the filter is like.
John_Fraser The pump may be making noise because it's grinding up dirt sucked up from the bottom of the tank.
