not to mention wind up the boost, and start modding them.
they are a bloody good hp platform.
pity its just based on the ford 4L in saying that the twin cam is much much better than the older single cam, would be fun to see one in a 242 or somethingn

On VEGA there was a lot of talk about M47 vs T5, so I thought I'd give this thread a look. I barely understood any of it, to be honest.

Currently the Moose has an M45 w/3.91 diff. I love the diff, and don't want to change it, but 3200 RPM @ 100KPH isn't ideal. Another reason for needing a fifth gear is the future plans for a +T... I don't want the car to always be on boost when on the freeway! I need a fifth gear, but don't want to go down the M46 road, so it seems that it's a toss off between an M47 or a T5.

The +T will most likely come from a 740T, and I'm not wanting crazy boost out of it. This will be in addition to the 531 head which is almost ready for install. Will an M47 be sufficient, or should I invest more money into the T5 gearbox? Will the T5 be overkill for what I'm needing?

What are the pros/cons to each box? How much would I be expecting to pay for the T5 conversion, including labour?

I'd go for the t5 for nicer gearing and power handling ability. You won't be on boost with a turbo on the freeway. Just would have instant boost.

Either would need a speedo reader of sorts to make up for the lack of sensor.

Also I wouldn't go with 740t parts. Skinny rods and poor flowing exhaust manifold.

not to mention the ease of parts. T5 being so common in aus/usa there is a wealth of knowledge and parts including tonnes of ratios to choose from

And so it begins! Got this AU box today for cheaps. Measures 60.5mm = 23.8 inches stick to face as per photo. The BA box is indeed longest at 24.5" thus far. Spoke to a rebuilder in Sydney he says the BA T5 are tougher, one of the biggest (longest) T5s. Others say they're about the same strength. Guess the only real way to know is starting with fresh boxes, same car driven by the same guy. Would be nice to see them side by side. I'll continue the updates in the garage section under "Lisa..."

Nooooo!! I thought the commo box was an inch shorter at 23"?? The Falcon gearbox surely has to be longer, being I6 vs V6?

No the Commodore box is the longest I found. The boxes are the same length the shifter position is different look at the back of the box. The shifter sits flush on the commodore box and further forward in the ford version. this is my photo of the box in Jay's car

Can you measure the input shaft? Because that box looks like a commodore T5

Also you are getting a bit of an angle up to the shifter increasing your measurement

put a straight edge up onto the box face to get a horizontal measurement.

as we have mentioned in messages, the T5z is the stronger built box designed for the xr6turbo. for a very short time prior to the much much larger t56.

that box does look almost i identical to mine. jump back to the first few pages to have a look.
