Here is what I know about the axles from 850s and V70s:
  • The V70 T5 manual gearbox axles have the thickest shaft
  • V70 T5 axles have larger knuckles
  • V70 axles have rifling on the shaft, whereas 850 axles do not
  • 850R auto trans axles are the same diameter as NA 850 axles
Here you can see side-by-side comparisons of an 850R auto axle and V70 T5 manual axle

great info...
And fitment to the 850 auto T5 is cool?
are we going to break these with stock power :) ?
Yep they fit the 850 auto gearbox just fine. To my knowledge all the shafts and gearboxes are interchangeable.

I don't think we would be breaking the thinner ones with stock power. I think if you fit an LSD and tuned the car you might get closer to their safe maximum but even then I expect they'd be fine. The knuckles might wear out faster though.
I can also confirm that the '94 850 10V manual axles that I have here are larger than the C70 T5 Auto axles I have.

I would suggest that manual axles are big / auto axles are small. They are certainly all interchangeable but.
interesting, my 94 850 has the rifling on the end of the shaft.
No idea if they are stock or after market, replaced with something else etc.
I suspect all manuals have big axles, big cvs and grooves.
Lol, still got the tool you made for me, worked a treat.

You won't break the shaft but the cv joints can.break as i found out second run up the 1/4mile last Sunday

Yeah I feel like mine were not far away from doing that.
Looking at my V70R axles and CVs today in comparison with the 20V NA 850 motor ones and they look like the same ones! The R has what looks like a weight clamped on the lhs one , don't know what that's about.
Left axle should be the same. Rh axle will be different because AWD.
Must look at that , was just a cursory look at lhs ones. What's the weight on there for? Harmonics??
Its simply a 'balancer' to get rid of some driveline resonance.
But is it only on the later cars? Or just the AWD ones?
Must be later cars, both my 98 C70 and my 98 s70 parts car had the weights. I couldnt get it off which made it a pain in the arse to get the new CV boot on.
My 96 NA motor sitting here has what looks like the same shafts and CVs as the R AWD , interesting....
