Unlikely this solution is for everyone, but I thought I should share.
One thing I believe that has improved or enhanced my in car experience is Android Auto, or Carplay for the Apple users amongst us. The ability to use voice commands for Navigation and Music control is a real luxury and hard to live without once you have used it.
After a bunch of failed attempts with single din units that were garbage, including a Pioneer unit that relied heavily on a phone application (not sure about the legalities of this whilst in a car) I decided to investigate an idea that had been percolating for a while.
I found a Volvo 240 dash insert on Thingiverse, reversed it for Right hand drive and modified the design until I had the Sony Haed unit securely mounted. The next step was to relocate the AC vents, (AC is another luxury I cant live without). The 240's modular dash design made this reasonably straightforward. I used some plastic AG pipe and fittings to redirect the air over to the clock / auxiliary gauge mounts. I drew up some crude gauge dimensioned vents for a factory style fit.
I think it turned out okay. Future goal is to redesign the vents to have angled grilles for a bit of directional flow control.
