Td04 19t off a v70r?
jaykenneally
No idea what Ill do with it yet but its likely Ill be taking some parts from an R :D
Ex850R
R manual for 19T , auto has 16T.
A tune will give you good bang for buck , the turbo requires other mods.
jaykenneally
what on earth is 19T and 16T lmao!
And it probably does need a tune, and can someone PLEASE fix my painful accelerator. Today it seems okay but the other day it was literally just an on/off switch. It would go from nothing to burnout. And I had transmission issues that day as well... Coincidental?
Ex850R
Crush it.
Consider the cost and time etc , I think Ben mentioned as he had one the decision was made not to pursue it , good money after bad etc and sold it to Berry's.
Would be good to convert the V70 to AWD with the parts!!

The early XC70 & V70XC in the 2nd gen shape can be more troublesome than others. This is reflected by their very low used value.
Personally, I wouldn't touch any of them between 2001-2005.
That said, some friends of ours had a 2003 model which did huge kms and never gave them an issue at all.
The flip side, of course, is another mate of mine who paid more than I suggested he should and bought a 2001 model against my recommendation. 'The best thing ever' or 'great value' has now turned into 'I hate the f**king thing' or 'my wife refuses to drive it'
I had 240s mostly while I was a uni student - though that was some time ago now - they were good in that I could largely fix them myself, not a heap went wrong, parts were affordable on the wages of full time student, part time barman, part time waiting staff that I found myself on, while still be able to afford books, rent and food. :)

They are nice cars but they just have some expensive bits that break commonly after periods of poor maintenance which unfortunately most by now have had.
850 and X70 up to 98 while also missing some maintenance by now, don't break in expensive and stranding ways.
YMMV but I wouldn't stick with your XC70 without a strong sentimental attachments and deep pockets for the bad times.

No offence guys but please don't tell me to crush my car, I don't care if its problematic the whole point of spending 5.5 grand on the thing wasn't so I would turn around and send it to the wreckers...
The whole point of going through the VIV and rescuing the car from the crusher would be somewhat defeated, no?
Im willing to persevere through the issues for the time being because I can't exactly afford to lose 5.5 grand.
Some days I hate the bloody thing as well but most of the time it really isn't that bad, sure it thumps around sometimes but it drives and its mostly reliable and that is one huge step up from my old car, which is the same age as a 240 now.

Might be worth shelving for a while and accumulating bits for auto rebuild with stronger internals from the US v8's that also use the tranny. Then install and get every update you can get your hands on. Or maybe source a 6 speed manual from a focus xr5?
I really didn't mean to come off as suggesting crushing but putting k's on with a failing tranny is asking to be stranded.
jaykenneally
The plan is to shelve the car, Im just gonna put it in the backyard and do what I can and use the other V70 as the daily. Using the car is a daily is whats killing it, when I was just on the highway with it I don't think it ever gave me an issue, I may put a manual on it as well, we'll see.
No I know and I wasn't trying to be rude. I didn't realise this model was so problematic before I bought and now I have the thing it seems like a mega backward step , Im just gonna try and stick it out.
Funny, my old mechanic told me that although it would thump and bump, the transmission shouldn't actually fail...

Awesome, sounds like you are on the right track.

Soft suspension and seats does mean it feels nice on a highway I guess. But soft suspension is not good for performance or good handling. Your telstar didnt come out in 1976 but it won't be as nice as a 240 just because it's not as well engineered. A reco box costs 3k or so it seems and they need new sprags and stuff. The t6 has the gm box that is used in the states. Not this one.

My bad on the thinking there were beefier bits around. I guess one from a late c30/s40/v50 would be the best bet then?
jaykenneally
Haha I would hardly call either of my V70's 'soft suspension', neither is exactly a featherbed to rid in. The 240 I test drove wasn't either. Probably the most soft car Ive owned was the Telstar, and because it weighed around the same as a small go kart, it still drove pretty well. The Telstar wasn't badly engineered I don't think and its engine can date back a bit further than 89 when it came out. But indeed it was a problematic child and that car probably spent more of its life off the road than it did on it. Its not like I don't like the 240s, I absolutely do, I saw a sky blue one on Gumtree for a grand the other day and boy is it tempting butttt I don't have a grand and again, can't justify four volvos!
Hopefully it won't need a reco box, I reckon I can save this one with a shit tonne of fluid changes, software updates, tranny cooler, lots of freeway driving with thrashing the crap out of it and worst case scenario a new valve body...
Vee_Que
Having driven xc volvos. Yes they are soft compared to most cars. Stock 240s are too. But the fwd sports model volvos come with stiffer suspension you trust in fast corners unlike xc volvos.
jaykenneally
The standard older V70 does feel nice through the corners, the XC can feel like a bit of a boat, but higher ride height I guess! Oh well I have the best of both worlds by having... Both! Haha. The previous owner of that 240 told me he replaced all the suspension so maybe it was harder than stock.
Vee_Que
Stock springs are soft on 240s though. Decent shocks likr bilsteins are worth it. There is never a place for a boat even on a highway I think.
jaykenneally
Actually one of my front struts is shot (on the XC), is it worth replacing it with a s/h stocky or should i just bite the bullet and chuck some newies/aftermarkets on both?
Vee_Que
Always the pair as your suspension works together and the other won't be far off. Fcpeuro for cheaper stuff. But you're better to take the car to a workshop and get the issues diagnosed as the more you drive it the more damage you cause. And you cannot think it isn't happening because it is.
jaykenneally
Ill add it to the list haha.
Are you referring to my transmission issues or the suspension?
My tranny was nice to me today. Ive worked out a solution, use manual mode and when shifting gears, just before i use the selector i put my foot down and its nice and smooth.
