Haha true I guess. Everyone told me the Telstar would be reliable and it turned out to be not so. Ill see what comes around I guess. I do like the 240's, not so much the other ones, I don't know why, and any wagon that has a 5 pot in it Im bound to like haha.

Only if its a Volvo mechanic of course.
Mention Volvo to a shop in a country or suburban shop and they say no.

Old cars in general workshops don't like working on because issues take longer to sort out though. They are a great car to learn to work on cars even if they are a bit slow though they are solid.

Haha, thats true, Ive been doing my best to get specialised mechanics for my V70, which will probably be going to Volvrek now :)

My old telstar never got sorted out in any workshop, I managed to fix it myself. It kept stalling all the time, needed a new carby in the end. We'll see. Any 240 wagons going around? A GLE painted in sky blue with a dark blue Velour interior please :x

Yeah I found that in Warrnambool with the 245 and it was the accumulator boot in the end , just what Berry had said on the phone before I took it to the closest shop who did nothing , the next one was bloody good but didn't want to waste my money and other clients not getting their cars fixed while mucking about with mine which was honest and fair enough but left me the only option of a tow to Melbz!
I didn't have time to play as long hours and then seeing my Family after a drive home Satdy arvo and back at 4am on Monday took all my spare hours. Fun times!

How hard can a 245 even be? I looked at a 240 GLE sedan and popped the bonnet and everything looked pretty obvious to me.
I kind of want a 5 pot volvo so I can service it myself and get a bit more familiar with it and maybe eventually start working on my V70 myself as well.

Chasing an obscure problem is harder for non Volvo teck.
Even Volvo tech took time to chase down problem , by the time I got it to Melbz, some two years after the problem , I had forgotten the diagnosis from the guy where you are taking your car to , Berry's !
Bloody good place that!
jaykenneally
Haha I guess thats true of any car except maybe a Toyota.
Yeah i think Berrys will be my new guys, the place looks more profesh as well, might cost me a bit more but ah well.
Vee_Que
Even toyotas are just as annoying to fix. It's s myth from the 70s corrollas and hiluxs that they are amazing.
Once you learn on a 240. Working out to fix everything. You will then be able to look at pretty much anything on a p2 car and work it out. Just need the Haynes manual for help.

There is an '83 Volvo 240 GLE sedan for sale at the moment for $700 in Altona, no oil leaks that I could see, seemed to run okay but might need a few engine mounts or something, it had I think about 270,000 kays on it. I did go and see it and drive it, only really the age was putting me off....
Ex850R
There is a nicely patinaed 260 in Altona Nth too , have lost his number and it was a roughie but sounded good , he could be talked down to less maybe than the throwaway $1000 he shouted out at an intersection!! :)
Vee_Que
Lots of 240s to buy still. Don't rush it.
deleted_user_160
Berry also has a really clean late 240 $400
jaykenneally
Hahah, yes Im not rushing into a 240 decision, if I was to buy a 240, it would have to be the following:
-Either a sedan or a wagon but wagon is definitely preferred (mum will steal it).
-It has to be a 240, I don't really want to be driving around a big, old, six cylinder car. The 4 pot is probably reasonable on fuel but I think the 260s would be fairly terrible.
-Something post '83. That way I get 4 speed transmissions I think (correct?). Also I think that is when they switched to unleaded? The 83 I looked at was a 3 speeder and leaded fuel.
-A sky blue one, dark blue one or silver one, or maybe even a white one, anything that allows me to get the blue velour interior as I am in love with that colour interior. Not so keen on the brown, I think the lighter beige is acceptable provided it has a black dash and gets broken up a bit lmao. The white seats with black dash is also nice.
-A sky blue one so it matches my other Volvo :)
-Something with more than no kilometres on it but less than a billion. If I see a 240 with 20000 on it Im going to assume it has rolled over!
-A GLE or something with power windows PLEASE as I can't stand manual ones. And it needs to have air con.
Someone find me that for less than the price of a house (my limit is like a grand) and Ill be there.
So fussy :) Im getting fussier with my 850s now, something with a beige interior and Im sold basically. Same with the V70s, but even then I could be swayed.

Update on this crappy 850. I have been starting it and moving it around my driveway every now and then. And now the smoke comes instantly, the burnt smell has returned again, that usually will disappear and it will run clean for a minute or two and then start pumping out steam. Im just going to assume that this engine is stuffed to be honest.
Im going to look at an 850 wagon at the auctions on Friday I think. Ive already seen this one but they keep messing with the price and its annoying me but it looks like they might be dropping it so Ill have a talk to them and see. If I can get it for less than a grand Ill probs buy it and fix any of the broken stuff on the wagon from the good stuff on the sedan :)
Otherwise, Alex you can come and try to diagnose it properly if you want, otherwise Ill be calling the wreckers for it and sending her off to the scrapyard cos I can't be bothered with it!
Vee_Que
Led than $500 is a good price for a non turbo auto 850 with no known history....
jaykenneally
It sold anyway literally about an hour after I wrote that post, for something like $1450 as well, not worth it!
So now Im on the car hunt again. Been browsing all night and there is just nothing around at the moment it sucks!
Vee_Que
Wait. Time is your friend.
jaykenneally
Okay so I haven't found a replacement 850 or S70/V70 yet and I can't really keep my dead one around here any longer, so with the exception of maybe the battery which I will keep, is there anything else worth pulling off this car before I call up a wrecker and get them to take it? Im thinking the cluster, stereo (if I can remove it) and maybe the abs computer if i can find it. Anything else?
