I get it. that its sort of rare but only to some of the Volvo community , if its a tow car the a turbo or charger would make sense as the donk can take a big power upgrade and as a workhorse you want safe driving so bigger brakes and more power makes sense and all is easily reverted back to normal when you dont use it for that.

It your car , do what you need to as who cares what others think.

In fact , if you keep it stock maybe a proper tow car is needed like a XC90 or as Bear has determined , a BMW 530D .

I will probably only use it for short towing trips, I have a 2008 XC70 D5 which will become my tow car eventually, but it doesn’t run properly and basically the best way to fix it is to get another car to swap parts over from, it doesn’t throw any codes, I suspect someone has put petrol in it. I might be picking up an XC90 D5 tomorrow though.

That would be a great tow vehicle , comfy too!

    Awesome daily driver

Really not a heavy duty tow car, the 3.0L I6 is nice and all, but they don't have the GVM rating or the torque to tow anything like a car trailer with anything on it. Id know, Ive done it ?

I got my shocks genuine from FCP a few months ago, monroe box with genuine stickers on them. Well worth the effort.

Very nice sled you have there!

Thanks Julian, it will be interesting to see how it goes towing, hopefully the XC70 will be on the road soon and the 960 won’t need to do much towing. I got monroe shocks from autodoc, I got Rein strut tops and Febi control arm bushes from FCP. I also got new mirror glass since it’s a slightly different shape to 740/940.

Very nice - looks great in that colour!

Thanks Greg, once the XC70 is sorted out I’ll probably respray the 960, the paint isn’t great close up, while I’m at it I’ll colour match the sill covers and front lower section of the bumper.

Great looking car even today in a timeless boxy wagon with modern twist way.

Can see why they didn't sell too many of them though!

But then an E-class wagon with 4cyl or a 5 series was 100k, so this was a bargain in 1996 ?

Thanks, I always liked the styling of the wagon. Great to know the price, I've found a few price lists from Volvo Australia in the mid 90s but the 960 wagon isn't listed. I'm picking up a 1984 BMW 735i soon, which has power memory seats, I can't imagine that was cheap.

      The beemer will be grest

One boss i had drove one, we went out to s meeting one day, boy it had some poke!

Loved the trick of the windows open 5mm at unlock then up when all doors shut to allow for perfect cabin air seal that would hinder shutting.

Thanks. I fitted a transmission cooler a few days ago.

What for? The 30-40 has active cooling management and hardly even gets warm.... just make sure to flush it with full syn fluid

Mostly for towing, also so I can fit a custom radiator without built in cooler.

The colour really suits the 960, once cleaned up it will be a great looking car to cruise around it (as it is, it looks pretty good already!)

Thanks, it's one of my favourite colours for the 960.

I got this cargo cover from the UK today, luckily I already had a fitting kit.

You going to leave the stereo stock or upgrade it to something modern?

I'm going to fit the genuine amp, I have one from a P80. I'll also fit a Bluetooth module that plugs into the CD stacker connection.

The Autodoc order with front shocks, mirror glass and transmission mount finally showed up after 5 weeks. I now have all the parts to do the front suspension. But the package was fairly damaged and one of the mirror lenses got broken. I was able to fix the passenger mirror though.

Wow that's a serious packaging and/or handling fail!

Agreed. But the intact bits look very nice.
