  • DCW’s 960 wagon

I’ve always wanted a 960 wagon, I’ve had my eye on this car for a long time, and after talking to the owner recently he decided it was time to find a new home for it, we agreed on a deal and I got a lift down to Mornington to pick it up, I drove it back to Ballarat, taking the ferry from Sorrento to Queenscliff.

Its a 1996 960, 417 metallic blue with dark grey interior, B6034 and 4sp auto. Its an SE which means it has a glass sunroof, premium audio with CD player, CD stacker, leather steering wheel, woodgrain, and power seats.

The previous owner had taken very good care of it, but it definitely needs some attention. The front suspension is the main issue, it needs strut tops and shocks. It also needs a few bushes in the back, and an oil leak from the PCV fixed.

I plan to use this as my daily, and occasionally a tow car. Over the next few weeks I need to sort out all the suspension issues, and do some basic mods.

Picking it up in Mornington

I temporarily fitted some Titans, I'll probably go back to the S80 wheels soon.

Good stuff, love a 960 and wagon even better.

Be qiute a rare car wouldn't it and once issues fixed very comfortable, very nice.

Kevin Greenaway had one a long time ago, he contacted Volvo Australia who told him only 41 were imported.

I just ordered front shocks, control arm bushes and strut tops.

Nice to see your going to restore and enjoy it, it will be a great tourer and ocassional tow car, enjoy

Thanks. I fitted a transmission cooler a few days ago.

      Gorgeous!

Did it have a P* badge on back before?

Thanks, it did, that was the first thing to go. Eventually I'll change all the rear badges to the earlier style.

Also... if you want to go aftermarket EMS and paddle shift on the trans.... let me know... happy to help

Then they're genuinely rare in Oz.

One unfortunately went to scrap about a year ago and it wasn't accident damaged or rusty.

Really nice car you have there.

Was this Stephen Taranto's old car?

Thanks, I think I heard about that one. It seems most of the wagons sold here were the earlier version with the 760 front too. The UK seems to be a good source of parts.

          Yep, sure was.

When is the supercharger being fitted?

Very tempting, but seeing how rare it is I don’t really want to do any mods that aren’t easily removed, plus I have a supercharged 240.

I get it. that its sort of rare but only to some of the Volvo community , if its a tow car the a turbo or charger would make sense as the donk can take a big power upgrade and as a workhorse you want safe driving so bigger brakes and more power makes sense and all is easily reverted back to normal when you dont use it for that.

It your car , do what you need to as who cares what others think.

In fact , if you keep it stock maybe a proper tow car is needed like a XC90 or as Bear has determined , a BMW 530D .

I will probably only use it for short towing trips, I have a 2008 XC70 D5 which will become my tow car eventually, but it doesn’t run properly and basically the best way to fix it is to get another car to swap parts over from, it doesn’t throw any codes, I suspect someone has put petrol in it. I might be picking up an XC90 D5 tomorrow though.

That would be a great tow vehicle , comfy too!

            Awesome daily driver

Really not a heavy duty tow car, the 3.0L I6 is nice and all, but they don't have the GVM rating or the torque to tow anything like a car trailer with anything on it. Id know, Ive done it ?

I got my shocks genuine from FCP a few months ago, monroe box with genuine stickers on them. Well worth the effort.

Very nice sled you have there!
