Going through my stash of parts and sifting through the best bits of what I had to go back in, I came across an interesting variation in the Dolby centre dash speaker grilles typically found on V70R and some C70 models.
The grey dash top I had was from a 2000 model car and featured a centre grille with extruded medal mesh, clipped into a plastic surround. The plastic surround was split so I trawled through my boxes P80 platform parts I'd been hoarding in search of one I remember buying a while back.
For reference, here's the two side by side -
The one on the left, with extruded medal mesh and plastic surround is made in Germany, while the single piece plastic one on the right is made in Austria. There were no markings to work out which was newer to have a guess as to whether one type superseded the other.
The underside -
I repaired and reassembled the damaged one and used the single piece plastic one.
As my car is a '97 and the dash top I'm using is from a 2000 car, I needed to swap the passenger airbag over to the earlier style as well. My parts car had an early style airbag but with a manufactured date of 2008 which might suggest they'd deployed at some point and been replaced or it'd been recalled. So, I grabbed the early style, 2008 manufactured airbag in the new dash top and used that.
Top - 1997 dash with early style airbag module.
Bottom - 2000 dash with late style airbag module and centre speaker.
Taking the dash loom out of the original dash took some time but fitting it back into the new dash wasn't too bad.
