The 940 is to me the most relaxing Volvo model to drive, superb steering rack, pliable suspension bushes, rear wheel drive, no road noise, great visibility, vg seats, top heater.

The above combination is quite unique and this model was very expense when new, around $80k (28 years ago!)

Yep, I agree. It's a lovely car to drive.

    Brief update.

I've done a few little jobs recently.

The bracket clamping the rear muffler had corroded and fallen apart so a new genuine bracket was obtained from GCP and installed,

Then about 3 weeks ago the water pump started leaking through the weep. I obtained a replacement through Sparesbox which took 2 weeks to arrive. I've received parts from the US and Europe faster that that.....

Old water pump leaking. Doesn't look much in the photo but it was leaving a decent size pool of coolant on the shed floor after every drive requiring frequent topping up.

    Mid-job:

    Complete (Shiny ?)

    Issues needing attention:

Engine oil leak from rocker cover.

Transmission oil leak from pan gasket.

Front left shockie seems to have failed. There is a knock in the front over sharp bumps and bouncing the front left of the car results in it rebounding 4-5 times compared to the front right which stops pretty much immediately.

New slider pins on front calipers (I think that's the problem anyway).

Air conditioning works when it wants to. It has a dodgy solder joint on the control panel circuit board which I've attempted to fix a couple of times but my soldering skills are shit so it didn't last long.

Honestly I don't know if I will address these problems as I'm not sure if I'll keep the car so it could be up for sale in the near future.

    Final update on this car.

Transmission died last week thanks to a broken trans cooler in the radiator that filled the trans with coolant. This, along with several other persistent problems with this car means I am now parting it out. I can't be fucked with it any more. I've had a gut full of wasting time and throwing money at it only to have problems re-emerge a few months later. If I was paranoid I'd say this car is possessed. I wish I'd never bought it.

I've already started pulling parts off it and I'll be putting up an ad in a few days in case anyone wants parts. I'll be keeping the engine and most of the interior trim. I've already taken the 23mm/19mm anti-roll bars off it and put them on my other 940.

It can happen to any car.

That’s why it’s so important to practice good cooling system maintenance.

People neglect it, corrosion begins, next minute wrecked transmission.

Change coolant every two years. Change radiator and all hoses every ten.

I've maintained the car to a high standard - I can be pretty fastidious about maintenance. Obviously I can't say whether previous owners have been equally as careful. The car had complete service records up until about 220K km but after that there's not much history. I bought it with, I think, about 390K km and it has 422K km on it now so who knows how much attention it's had during that period.
