Buy my s40?
I would advise not to buy a V50 if your wanting a easy to maintain car. I have a 2.5L v50 AWd turbo and nothing has been simple to fix or replace. plastic, plastic plastic everywhere just ready to break under the bonnet if you as much as look at it. On the upside the V50 is a nice car to drive, mine is quite thirsty. but dam who ever designed this V50 should have been shot. TBH, i feel the V50 design maintenance as been an after through the whole car.
Cabin filter - bastard of a job, well over an hour to change.
Octopus Hose - Nightmare to change - over 4 hours
Even the oil filter is not as easy to change as an old v40 was much easier.
Want to change the audio? again not simple as everything is integrated.
Ive had it 12 months and I have already had to change the coolant tank.
I'm dreading to see what is installed for me next as I plan to change brake pad & rotors, timing belt etc, drain fill trans + AWD filter just as a preventive maintenance thing i always do when i get a second hand car.
If you do buy a V50, place a bible in the glove box, perhaps that might help :)
To get a manual turbo P1 for $6k you are going to end up with one that will need all the maintenance items doing, or really high kms, or both. so you will end up spending more than that anyway, so it might be worth increasing your budget a bit to find a better one.
nerfherder For sale: 2009 C30 R-Design T5 manual. Good condition over all, there is a scratch on the LHR and the arch trim has come away from the body slightly, wouldn't be hard to fix, just haven't got around to it yet. Pretty much stock other than after market wheels and lowered springs, I have the stock parts available aswell. ACT rego until Dec 2018. ~190,000km Recently had the timing belt and waterpump service done. $11,000
This one is in Belconnen, I went and had a look at it over a year ago, he has advertised it intermittently since then so it may still be available. It was pretty clean and drove really well.
Also, you'll have better luck finding something if you expand your search to include a Focus XR5, it's basically the same car as a C30 but more common, and they are all manual.
The budget cannot be expanded, it’s as good as I can afford unless I sell the Jaffa. And I may be tempted to do so if it ends up with someone who will care for it and not park it up or part it out. As for a Focus they’re higher priced and in poorer shape than any of the Volvos so far.

I’d prefer something other than a sedan
Fair enough about the budget, but my point was that in that price range you're probably going to need to do the timing belt service once you buy it and it will probably have high enough kms that the suspension is clapped out, so straight away there is a minumum of $2-3k to spend.
Looking on Carsales there are way more affordable and decent looking XR5's than manual Volvos, just none of either in Canberra. The advantage of the XR5 is that it's way more practical than a C30 - you said you didn't want a sedan but don't underestimate how impractical a C30 is!
If you're happy with an auto there are probably plenty more options though.
How much for the Jaffa if you sell it?
Jaffa price? Hmm I’d like 6k but I wouldn’t expect that much. 5k would be alright. I’ve already had a go at writing an ad for the old girl but struggled to finish it, I am still unsure I can part ways with it
Maybe I’ll just buy another Mazda, it sounds like less work, but not really that interesting

auvolvo,,,,, the v50 are easy to work on and are a great little car with not many issues maybe you have not been shown properly how to change these items. I have for my daughter as her first car which she loves.
Most of my customers love their v50s
Hi Deger, thanks for your reply. Perhaps I have higher expectations, however the lower radiator hose for me was definitely not a quick and easy change, it was very fiddly and time consuming. You have to remove so much crap out of the engine bay at first, and then try and work around the wiring harness, under , over and around so much stuff and then wrestle to get the ECU box and air filter box back into place. Given the frequency of failure rate of this specific hose I have read online, I opted to replace with silicone hoses perhaps this made the job a little more difficult as the hoses seemed to be tighter fitting. but still, if this hose failed again id most probably just sell the car.
Additionally, the lower hose from underneath the coolant tank which extends to the back of the motor is also a tight fit. My only saving grace was I have small hands.
If you know how to change the cabin filter easily, i'm all ears. because many online have also complained regarding the issues with changing even the basic cabin filter. My friends Toyota Camry took a whole 2 minutes to change. if you can change the cabin filter of a V50 in 2 minutes, Ill drive over and you can show me :)
I've done the cabin filter just a few times now
Maybe takes me 15minutes
Its way easier on LHD p1 cars than rhd one for sure
Lhd is 2 minutes max
That said, changing the engine air filter on a p1 has to be the fastest on near any factory car

Undo one vacuum hose and then one wing nut and 3 clips on the 80. 30seconds tops
any car engine filter is basic to change. I was refering to the cabin filter. I dont see how the cabin filter is done in 15 minutes.
remove lower center console, remove lh side under console + remove glove box, the peal back carpet lining, then undo and unclip the fuse box section that obstruct the access to the cabin filter which sits under the glove compartment, then wrestle the cabin filter out over a close bracket which prevent flter easy slide out. then try and insert new filter in tight space without ripping and the everything else in is installed in reverse.
that definitely did not take 15 minutes for me. how do you change it?
hi Tim, what is the CEM ?

Open hood and 2 t25 torx that take 3 turns and are captive and it slides out in a carrier
