Yuri's V50 Purchase

Hi Everybody!

My name is Yuri and I've just joined your great forum.

I'm based in Sydney and I'm in the process of (hopefully) purchasing a 2007 V50 T5 AWD from interstate. I was looking at a Skoda Octavia RS but the V50 just ticks so many more boxes.

I've had it professionally inspected and it's in great condition except for a cracked/worn drive belt and lower control arm bushes that are split. I'm not willing to drive it interstate with the belt in that condition so I'm weighing up my options between getting it fixed interstate and driving it back OR getting it trailered to Sydney and having the repairs carried out upon arrival. Given everything I've read, I figure it's also a good idea to get new gearbox fluid, flushing the brakes and an oil change.

I spoke to Savvas Automotive and he was super helpful and sounded like he really knew his stuff. I'm happy to receive any advice or suggestions as I continue this process.

And i love the car , i very nearly had one but the owner changed his mind and kept it.
Plenty of Bruces on here in Sydney.
They can advise on who is best workshop.
Havent heard of Savvas at all.

Hmm, it would definitely be more fun to fix it and then road trip back to Sydney!

Good choice too, T5 AWD will be fun! Do you want the AWD for anything in particular? I was looking at V70 AWD for a while to use down at the snow.

Thanks guys! Yeah, I have a preference for the drive back to Sydney for the fun of it.

The choice of AWD just happens to be an added feature as I like all the features of the premium model. Added safety for when the fiancée needs to drive it.

It would be great to get advice on reputable mechanics as I'm new to the Volvo scene. I've always had a soft spot for Volvo's though. Ever since the Group A era and Robbie Fransevic.

We recently sold an Eibach kit to an S40T5 AWD owner. End result was very good.

The V50 is located in Adelaide and I've been in contact with Angus Mitchell Automotive if I go down the path of getting the work done before I pick it up.

It's done 76,000 kms and the REVS check checks out.

I put in an offer but I haven't heard back from the seller in over 14 hours so the whole thing may have very well gone sour.

So it looks like I'm searching for another V50.

The seller won't go lower than $15,500 and I won't offer more than $15,000...oh well.

EDIT: My ceiling is $15,000 not $15,500, d'oh!

The plan was to fly down but to have the following work carried out prior to the drive home:
* Replace timing belt, tensioner bearing, idler bearing, water pump & coolant
* Gearbox fluid flush
* Brake fluid flush and bleed
* General service including oil and filter change
This works out to be $1,660 (inc GST). Factor in the flight, accommodation and fuel cost of $420, and the whole exercise will cost $17,080. Which leaves the registration process in NSW. (This doesn't include the $140 inspection or the $36 REVS report.)

I know it sounds stubborn but our budget is $15,000 and with repairs and transport it's more than $2,000 over our budget so you need to draw the line somewhere.
