Hey guys, ive had my 240 for a number of years now and recently the head gasket blew, so obviously the next step is into doing an engine swap. at the moment my first choice is the T-5 from the C30 turbo, with that adding some elevate performance parts. i havent been able to find much infomation about transmissions however and i dont know if its worth while to upgrade it as well. anyone have any info on how much abuse the stock 240 trans can take and if its worth keeping. if no what would be some good replacements?

Thanks!

Do a little bit of research, Google the transmission type followed by "max hp". Eg; volvo AW70 max hp

If it's an auto, it's an aw70. Can be swapped with an aw71 from turbo 740's, they can hold more HP

If it's manual, it will either me m46 4 speed or m47 5 speed. The m46 is stronger, holds up fine on my 14psi b230f.

ill do a bit more research but that definitely puts me on the right track, thanks!!

Not trying to sound like a jerk but throw a $$$ amount that your willing to spend on this project

It's much much much cheaper to fix/upgrade your engine and slap a turbo onto it than to swap a c30 T5 engine in

I strongly agree with tim, unless you're up for spending $15,000-$20,000 (plus incidentals) you shouldn't go there. How much power are you wanting? The B230F redblock is such an underrated engine, it would suprise you how much they're capable of with someone who knows how

B6304 pretty much bolts in with stock whiteblock trans and has near c30 t5 power levels without the turblow complication

was hoping to spend around $10k doing a lot of the work myself, i just felt a possible engine rebuild was out of my skill level. ill have a further look to see if the engine is worth saving though.

Once again not trying to offend only speaking from experience with this..https://ozvolvo.org/discussion/5572/1963-volvo-amazon-t5/p1

That money would evaporate very quickly.

10k would surely get you a well sorted turbo redblock putting out 150-200kws with a manual swap included if your car is auto.

If you're not currently confident rebuilding a redblock, then this swap is definitely beyond your skillset. That being said, you could certainly research the common redblock upgrades, source the parts yourself, farm out the machining to a trusted workshop and assemble a tough redblock yourself. There's plenty of people on here to advise you on options

The engine with blown head gasket is worth keeping. If you learn to fix it, you will become a better mechanic and future problems won't scare you as much because an engine rebuild is one of the most fulfilling jobs you could do

thank you @timbo that is some very good advice! ill be doing some more research and follow up on what i can do with my current motor!

Stay red block or B6304, cost effective mods can reward you with a fun engine that's cheap to maintain and keeps that car able for historic plates if you choose.

Gearboxes, supra with a Dellows bell housing?

@Ghettobird is selling his 'bolt in' whiteblock into 240 conversion if you're desperate to get rid of the B230.

BarelyRunning

I'm broke as shit, but what are you asking for the swap?

Buying a ready to install , fully sorted kit means you don't waste time and more money making mistakes on your own build.

And honestly, if you are broke then don't even start , it costs three times what you think it might.
