EOI 240 Turbo Conversion

My wifes 92 240 has been running now for 18 months after a major overhaul and aside from oil changes its never missed a beat.

It runs a B230FX with only 160k on it. Its an auto and my first question is can it handle her daily commute with stock standard turbo parts from a 740 etc?

Ive converted engines before mainly in French cars and the conversions parts seem like bolt on gear. The intermediate shaft for the distributor is surely easy to solve. Can it be done in-situ or is it engine out?

Ive got an awesome exhaust guy so that alao wont be an issue for the steering column fingers crossed.

The ECU situation. Is it easier to use the 740 engine loom and splice it in?

What are the odds of finding all thes parts these days?

Sorry for all the questions.

  • This is a broad overview

1.yes could handle the stock 740 turbo gear.
    90+turbo setup more desireable.
2.Would recommend adding auxillary engine oil and trans coolers.
3.You already have lh2.4 so existing loom is fine just plug in turbo computers add couple of turbo specific sensors and extend maf wiring.
    4. Will need to add coolant send and return and oil send and return for turbo + downpipe
    5.Profit?

Theres enough fiddly jobs to mean the wifes car is likely to be off the road for a bit, despite lots of people saying its a relatively easy job.
Wifes level of enthusiasm is likely to dimish rapidly the longer the it takes

Quite a common mod. Usually known as a "+T".
This information may help you google.
  • He won't need coolant to the turbo

    My turbo rebuilder said so

Your turbo rebuilder is living in the 1980s

  • Wow great responses. Thanks for your time.

Im the type if guy to collect everyrhing and try and get it done in 2 weeks at a shop. (Mates workshop).

The hardest thing will be finding a suitable donor car or equipment I think.

I like the idea of running all standard equipment and making it look factory. No looking for big HP just more than what ir has now.

Yes, Ive looked up the Plus T conversion hance why Im clarifying a few things. Mainly the ecu and wiring. Spunds straight forward since my car is running LH2.4.

Happy to add coolent and oil lines to and from the turbs. My Xantia runs the same setup.

Anyone have any leads to donor?

On one of the Facebook pages there’s a 740 turbo complete that hasn’t run in about 10 years out near wisemans ferry, guy wants 1k for it and doesn’t want to part it out. Could easily use all the bits from that

Sorry I take that back, it’s an ‘87 so it’s be running lh2.2
  • Ok thanks for the heads up. Im not on FB so will have to get a mate to help locate the thread unless you have a link?

I would be happy to use all I can from the 740 and just find the remaining parts required.

Whats the difference with the 90+ manifold? Assuming its the exhaust manifold people are talking about?

If you wanted to do that I’d happily grab the ecus as I’ve got 90% of all other turbo bits set up for mine

90+ manifold is a lot better flowing basically
  • Ok. Thanks for the link. Ill get in touch and see what the go is. The rough plan would be to take the car to my mech in Windsor and strip all the stuff required for the conversion and pass on the rest of the stuff. As Im running lh2.4 already your welcome to the ecus as long as I wont need them.

Im tied up for at least the next 3 months so will see if its still around then. Ill ask the seller if hes keen on a deposit and pick up at a later date.

Thanks for the help. How did you find it? I got onto the market place and searched but it came up with everyrhing not just volvos!
  • Looks great. Some good parts there for sure. I want to run injection so a no go at this point. If it were my car I wouldnt mind.
  • So i am keen on the 740t complete car. Im not fussed about the pre 90 manifold as its for the missus car and we wont be playing with much boost anyway.

Besides the exhaust I should be able to swap all the 740 gear, extend the required wires and add sensors and bons ur uncle?

The biggest challenge will be swapping the distributor. Can this be done in situ?

  • You need to confirm the 740 is an lh2.4 car or its going to be way more work than just extending maf wires
  • If it's a 740 it will be LH 2.2

    2.4 started on the 940
  • I thought the 90+ models had lh2.4
  • I don't think there were any 1990 740 turbo models and if there were they were a continuation of the 1989 model which made way for the 940 in 1991
  • I stripped a 90 740 turbo donor for a mates 240 project. Lh2.4 m47

  • The Lh2.4 began in 1989 for n/a motors and then turbo 1990 onward

  • My car is lh2.4 already NA if thar makes a difference
