I helped a friend out to do a drain and fill on his XC90 D5 with the same tranny after he said it was flaring between shifts and now reports improvement.

Also noticed you did the fluid change yourself, did you use genuine or JWS3309 fluid? My understanding is that it's needed for the correct function of the lock up converter in applicable transmissions.
3309 or any high quality full syn (that lists compliance) is fine
Just have to reset adaptation every time you flush fluid
Is the adaptation necessary, particularly if only doing a drain and fill diluting old with new (shouldn't the tranny continue to adapt to the minor change in fluid dynamics)?

I thought adaptation was particularly necessary after a rebuild etc. I've been doing Mobil ATF3309 (the Volvo OEM supplier of genuine 3309 fluid if I'm correct) with no issues. I'm planning on continuing drain and fills every 20-30 K on my transmissions and it's impractical and too costly to get a dealer to reset adaptations for me unless I've got an actual problem.
I went to the bloody Autobarn and they sold me a Penrite full syn, I might change the fluid again and replace it with Mobil ATF3309, and also buy Vida to reset the adaption.

I have been reading on the web and some says that can be a problem with engine mounts as well.

Do you think guys might be possible?

Spend $120 and have your own dice unit like the rest of us?
Any flush of more than 2L should really get an adaption unless the fluid coming out is quite clean already

Better than 3309? 3309 is not a brand it's a specification. Penrite has in the past claimed specifications it's doesn't have (read ZF 6HP26 6 speed special auto oil, Penrite no longer has a recommendation... There's apparently some reason behind that). Penrite is my most trusted brand, but correct specification is more important than brand. Mobil ATF3309 is supposedly the OEM product for Volvo as best I could read up, as much as I use Penrite for pretty much everything I'm a bit dubious about their synthetic ATF's claiming every spec under the sun.

I emailed Penrite to double check if the fluid was ok for my car and they replied: "It is, based on the information we are given".

I bought the Mobil3309 and Vida, I'll let you know if get any improvment once I flush the oil again and reset the adaption.

It's a minimal level of performance in specific tests
The penrite fluid exceeds those requirements and is a better fluid

3309 is a medium quality mineral fluid its breaks down and starts failing to meet its minimum specifications far sooner than a good synthetic will

I've got penrite in my zf 6 speed in my BMW
100k km of absolute abuse and it's doing better than on the zf life fluid

I know this is an old forum. But hoping someone might still be active? Just wondering if anyone knows what the fix to this issue is? I’ve got a 2019 S90 D5 having the same issues when going up an incline around 1500rpm begins to judder/shake.

    I’ve got it as well, in my 09 XC60 at 1500rpm with a bit of load on the gearbox.

    I believe it’s a worn torque converter lock up clutch. Basically the lockup TQ is slipping which causes the shudder. If I go into manual gear selection, down shift so the rpm increases (ie reducing the load on the gearbox) the slipping stops

    new torque converter needed. 😫

      jared244 What transmission does your XC60 have?

      How many kays on it, and how often has the transmission oil been flushed?

          TF-80SC, 180000km. Flushed at least twice. Last time was recently at the 180K service.

          More related to/same symptoms as the original poster I guess.

              jared244 Ah, the TF80SC rubber band....

              It appears if these things supposedly "sealed for life" (HA!) don't get a flush before about 80K km from new, they're essentially stuffed by the time the owners notice they're starting to fail. Then owners sick of the hard shifts and banging get them flushed, the fluid emerges brown or black, but it's too late by then since the damage has been done. Not the owners fault when the stealers insist the transmissions never need fluid changes.....

              Guessing that a valve body and possibly torque converter replacements are likely on the cards.
