hi everyone,
i was just deciding whether to put a boost valve onto my Volvo 740 HP because it already has the factory plus kit on it dealer fitted, the plus kit is apparently supposed to bring the hp level up to 20hp, wheres, would a boost valve set at 14 psi of boost be more exciting ?
nickm
probably more oomph but you will be on the edge of ping.
What LH system is it 2.2 or 2.4?
LH tends to dump fuel on to the situation when wound up with a MBC.

Sorry I'm not knowledgeable in that field, could I get you to elaborate please ,
Thanks Darcy

Doo eeet!
Wind it bit by bit.
Install an AFR meter and boost gauge too.
Much fun to be had.
Run 98 in it maybe as well.

The turbos ran 2 different fuel systems.
LH2.2 and upgraded LH2.4.
LH2.4 has error codes while the earlier lh2.2 does not.
I think by the looks of the photo your car is the earlier system.
So it is a bit dumber when metering fuel over the factory boost.
With a MBC you can play with boost and timing to get it running (not pinging) As well it builds boost quicker.
The hp or "plus" system holds boost in certain circumstances. up around 11psi I think. But it does not do this every time the car builds boost. That is still standard.
Get the Dave Barton gauge/face. They look cool/stock and give a good picture of what is happening psi wise.

I wouldn't bother till you have your p plates to even think about it Darc.

Na, I'm crazy enough to make it faster, I'll be doing a lot of country driving in the car in October and December, so I've gotta do something at least a boost valve and an ipd cam, and a few other small things ;) :D
Ben
I find it funny that my contemporaries are now the old buzz kill geriatrics telling younger members not to up boost or drive more sensibly :))
irishbastard
Yeah, I know, I haven't done anything to it yet, I'm to caught up with putting my spoiler on my 740 gl and getting the car resprayed or serious paintwork done to it :)
iceton1975
Wait till you get a licence before power upgrades, be sensible
Ben
Don't get me wrong that just because they're buzz kills automatically makes them wrong :)
IMHO you'll get more enjoyment out of the car if you start driving it stock everyday and then start to add the mods to it as you drive and learn the car. You'll get to know how the car changes and you'll become a better driver from it.
And as much as your brain says otherwise, more power equals more danger for young drivers. Sure, you'll scare the shit out of yourself a few times but having less power will make it less lethal/dangerous.
Enough grandpa rant!
irishbastard
Yeah, I Guess ill take you're advice @ben and modify the car, as time goes on, I guess it's fast enough as it is now, it's definetally faster than marks white 740, and my cars still stock
Vee_Que
Keep in mind the manual will fail if you abuse it as every young person does when they start driving.
irishbastard
Yeah I'm well aware, thanks for mentioning it @VeeQue, there's always an Auto conversion option, but then the cars unoriginal, so I've put that idea on hold :-?
irishbastard
I heard about the auto in you're car dying as well, are you gonna do a manual conversion ?
Vee_Que
Nope. Not the current box. Someone else is converting to a t5 ford box though.
Ben
This reminds me, we need to do an Austraian how-to guide for speeding up bricks.

So true just had a look at my new purchase it has a full larger exhaust system and the full HP kit which means S**t boost valve so much better will get it to the work shop next week and checked over, don't forget I have been into 7 series and out grown them, but but but, now I have 2 of them on my drive way, custom/standard
Vee_Que
I'm working on it. starting with the intercoolers that drop in. then I need more time..
iceton1975
Are you buying a custom intercooler made here or one of the net?
