I've acquired a 3 V50's and 2 C30's and 2/5 have suffered from this weakness (one busted sump on a V50 and one destroyed motor on C30 from debris that caused the accessory belt failure, both R-Design). A quality skid plate is essential for every one of these vehicles, unless you've got a spare motor and you don't care about changing it when the day comes. Just lie on your back and have a look at how exposed the sump is on an R-Design without a skid pan fitted. It's absolutely begging to get smashed, much more so than a P80. Perhaps the fleet of P80's in Aus have done many many re miles and therefore there are more horror stories.

My 2 IPD skid plates are in the post, 152 USD plus about $120 USD each in freight when combined with other parts. So just under 400 AUD on my doorstep.

Look forward to @AshDVS version as I'll be interested in 1-2 more if they are as good as the IPD ones and I can still do an oil change in <10 mins without pulling the pan or using a hoist.

Just spotted this on ali. Looks like it's a composite steel / plastic guard. Only $200 delivered. www.aliexpress.com/item/UNION-Car-styling-For-Volvo-C30-Plastic-engine-guard-2012-2015-For-C30-Engine-skid-plate/32822634747.html

Or $170 from the same supplier, under this listing. www.aliexpress.com/item/BING-WINS-Car-styling-For-Volvo-C30-Plastic-engine-guard-2012-2015-For-C30-Engine-skid/32832617291.html Strong enough to stand on!
Was looking at something for the S60, as the current felt thing arrangement leaves a little to be desired especially if the car sits a little lower.
Previously I'd only seen the IPD ones which do look quality but the shipping is killer.

The Chinese equiv one for that seller is certainly cheaper when you factor in the free shipping

It looks more generic than the IPD one though, the access holes don't seem to line up correctly. Is it made to fit the 5 as well as the 6 cyl? The IPD sell the same one for the 6 and 5 but say the drain holes on theirs dont lineup for the 5 only the 6. Also the NACA vents look backwards, the site however talks about negative pressure exhaust vents, maybe that's what they mean.
The chinese one also looks like it might be more plastic than steel, might just be the finish in those pics though.
Chinese on the left IPD on the right

Looking at the OEM though that removable panel looks like it probably lines up, not sure what the other access holes are for.

Anyone that's had a better look at replacing the current skid plate on an S60 have input?

Thanks
Not many of us here I'm afraid..
Something we need to fix,
Some of the local focus guys here are getting their undertrays covered by a local company that does spray on bed liners (line-X) don't think it's possible on the felt ones though

Felt!? Well that makes it easy for making a mold? CF anyone?

I don't see any steel on the Chinese ones unless you're counting the screws (which they possibly could be knowing some of the Chinese adverts!) I had a look at the Aliexpress site for the C30 one and see no steel in that one either. "Stainless steel six angle screw"...dodgy! I guarantee the body of that one pictured is plastic as you can't form steel that deep/convoluted unless you hot stamp it...which would cost a fortune.

Yeah not sure how the plastic would hold up to heat and road debris. Looks like I might just have to wait for a bulk buy of the aluminium one from IPD.

Thanks

We have a 2008 C30 T5 R-design with the factory plastic splash pan...seems to be holding up OK, although I did have to replace a couple of the press-in plastic nutserts in the body/crossmember as they were feeling stripped. Of course the plastic one won't do much for large obstacles...and it has to be removed for oil changes! :) The ipd ones look pretty good. I've made an aluminium one for our 240 (pictured below - shown when freshly painted with underbody deadener). Wasn't too hard, but I used pretty thin aluminium (1.2 mm thick to be precise) so it's more of a HD splash pan than a bash plate of course. Holds up a lot better than the plastic ones on the 240 that always seem to crack at the mounting points.

I did this to my s40 RDESIGN not a mark on the sump lol

Bloody lucky! Why did you do that for?

I bought 3 IPD ones some time ago and they are awesome, well worth it before freight, so if the un-jabbed people are ever allowed back on international aircraft again I may collect some on a USA trip.

I was thinking of getting a fabrication shop to quote on essentially making some up using the IPD ones as "inspiration". Unsure what people would pay for these, but I imagine to make it worthwhile I would need to make up at least 10 @$350/piece.

Expressions of interest anyone.

Ouch! That hurts to look at. :(

I turned the radio off and when I looked up to late this woman that lives right behind the end of that traffic Island stopped the turned across into her drive way I had one option hit the 2019 Cooper s that was behind her or try and hit her for being a idiot doing what she was doin so I aimed fo e the opposite side of the road and missed lol I clipped the mini and hit that yellow railing head on and as it bent over I t worked like a jump until the front right wheel folded around that pipe rail and brought everything to a sudden stop. 40klm/h yes it was a lo t harder hit than you'd expect at 40ks they had to use the jaws of life to c u t her wheel free but I was surprised no sump or gearbox damage but it ripped both drive shafts out and bet the passenger side firewall where I missed the bitch and hit the mini I feel a little fear every time see a union jack now lol Can you believe they recon that's $18000 worth of damage ha

OK, reviving this thread and am putting out feelers for some EOIs to assess potential order volume before I start approaching some manufacturing mates, pile on into https://ozvolvo.org/discussion/16804/c30-belly-pans-alloy-seeking-eois/p1?new=1

Based in regional NSW, where the hazards are lumpy so am wanting to get ahead of the risk before it gets expensive.

I am interested for my 2005 S40

Seems to me a guard for the belt would make more sense.

Be interested to see how you go. I have 2 IPD aluminium guards fitted to P1 cars and a third one in the garage I am yet to fit to my wifes daily driver, the V50 T5. These are great quality and design, but ridiculous USA freight makes import of them no longer viable IMO. People talk of bulk buys for overseas importing, but in recent times increasing quantities rarely seems to meaningfully decrease freight cost per item.

My industrial units are next door to a metal fabricator, so I was intending to take in my unfitted unit in imminently and see what it would cost for him to make these up. I am not so sure that it will work from a business perspective, since owners of 10 year plus Volvo's want everything for less than cost price.

If anyone is missing the Genuine Volvo plastic sump guards I have several of these available cheap.

I'd be interested in an original one as I currently have nothing.

Anyone wanting original genuine plastic splash guards just PM me. One sold, plenty more.

Okay so I have managed to get a local Bathurst fabricator to make these up in aluminium for what works out almost identical to the IPDUSA price + GST.

    $385 Including GST.

Obviously freight from USA is prohibitive these days and IPDUSA isn't viable.

Option 1; If I can get enough people interested I may be able to get better pricing for 5-10-15...

Option 2; I buy the one I need extra to what I have, then others can order directly from this fabricator that will have all the specs to make them on demand.

Option 3; I request a run of 10 and take all the risk myself and perhaps still have most of them 5 years from now. I'll still consider this if it seems there's demand.

If there's any genuine momentum behind option 1 please let me know by week's end and I'll see what the options are. Otherwise it's likely I'll go option 2.
