Ok, will do. Good thing with a name as unique as that is a phone number with the first hit on Google...

M10 and M30 are compatible as the M30 is literally 1.5 M10's, unfortunately M20 is a totally different design.

My car is M30 powered

M10 boxes behind M30's, although works for a short amount of time, results in exploded gearboxes for obvious reasons. M30 gearboxes behind M10's is also not ideal as they're much too big for the chassis' that M10's usually sit in.

I've had a PM from a bloke in the US who may have a gearset for me, he pulled in in the early 90's to build a competition box with straight cut gears etc.

Worst case, PPG will make me some gears, but bloody hell i'd be putting a lot of hope in the BMW community in regards to buying some remade 265 gears from me, as it's around $10k for a batch of 10...
My machinist mate could do it, send me specs if you have, schematic.
I'll ask him.
Maybe laser cutting is an option, with final finish milling then heat treatment.
Jeez Pip Barker has some decent BMW credentials, bloody hell

No worries Snoops, i'll try and find one...

I've been offered an M30 manual box (260/5) which is the later model E28 box... it'll work, but the speedo drive is different and i'd need a new crossmember and driveshaft. Lots of work for what is still a 30 year old gearbox that is weaker than the one I have.

Whoever converted this car to manual did it in the most expensive way possible, even the driveshaft is a BMW Motorsport alloy one.
Wish I had my 2002 now..
There's an old 4dr on my local BSS. I'm trying not to look...
I wish i'd bought Spac's for the price that we agreed on way back when...

Patina... Must leave it.
I'm poor.

But I have some coggy bois.

Holy shit. What was wrong with the box?
If the current box is some form of rare motorsports box with motorsports parts around it...
Why not sell or trade it and drop in a 120i motor with 6 speed manual?
I don't think you guys have been keeping up with the prices of these BMW's lately it's worth fixing and @Wino got it for a good price.
Ive seen the car in person when it was here for a rego and it's pretty tidy.
The damage to the box probably started in whatever car the box came out of for the conversion

@timbo

I don't think I've read anyone thinking of scrapping it
I've seen the car as well and it's imho awesome except for being broken

My thoughts are really that the rather rate motor sports parts are worth more to someone who wants motor sports parts than to yno and that he should be able to trade to something more aligned to the cars identity of a nice classic car with a reliable power train

Fitting a 120i motor to a 6-series would be a travesty. 130i motor would be more palatable, but I agree with Tim that it deserves to be kept reasonably original.

If I was to do any engine conversion, which I’m not, it’d be an M70. Yeah, a 1 series motor (even a 20 probably let alone a 30 or 35) is going to be faster, use less fuel, be more reliable, have more parts avaliable for it but... it’s a 70’s GT, fuel consumption and reliability are at the bottom of the list of considerations for the type of person who would have bought such a car in the first place, with the top priorities being comfort and speed, but also road presense, 12 cylinders singing at 5500rpm is going to be much more of an ordeal than a buzzy 4 pot, even if the 4 pot does produce more power.

The bloody fuel tank costs $150 to fill! It has a factory long range tank. I wonder who owned the car to begin with.

Anywho, it’s not so much that I need all the bits, it’s only first gear that’s noisy (stripped hardening on the gear). It’s just I had the option to buy all of the bits off a guy who built a racing gearbox for customer in 1991, so it was a case of buy all of the bits when I had the opportunity to rather than have to buy and wait for more bits which may or may not be easy to source.

All up landed in AUD we’re talking $1600, so it’s not cheap but it’s not 10 grand.

Ahh... I thought this was the 3 series... if 6 series... I agree with keep it stock or x35i motor
3 series was born an automatic M10 and it will die an automatic M10

I had the motor rebuilt recently, it actually goes a lot better than a 2 litre single Solex 3 speed auto car has any right to now that it has proper compression over all 4

It’s not fast, but compared to its contemporaries it’s not slow at all. Driving a 70’s car that’s performing as it should gives a different perspective to driving a 70’s car that’s had 45 years worth of wear and tear. One of the reasons I loved the 242 so much, you’re (almost) experiencing what someone in 1979 did when they took delivery of their brand new sports car.

Even the shittiest Festiva or Excel you see on the road these days was once a cherished, brand new, not-cheap purchase for someone in the world - Not that Festivas or Excels were expective new, just that any brand new car isn’t a trivial cost to most people
Well at least it wasn't the 10k. 1600 is reasonable for any European box. Even m46s can cost that.
What 6 series are we talking about here? Did you get a 633/35 Wino?
Australian delivered ‘77 633CSi. Was a Victorian car before coming to ACT in the year 2000.

Factory automatic, but was already a manual by the time Dickson inspected it in April 2000.

Only other mods are limo tint and a very, very 90’s stereo system comprising of an Alpine tape deck and 6x9’s, so while in France I bought this to fit that aesthetic:

Hell yeah, that thing looks awesome!

That colour (forget what it's called) works so well on early E24s and E23s
A wild Ninja 250 appeared.

Weird night last night, young bloke dropped it and left it at the Queanbeyan Red Rooster car park, as he had no way of getting it home. Mate of mine lives about 500m away from my work and has a bike trailer, so I offered to pick it up, take it home for old mate, you know, be helpful.

Anywho, agreed to meet up at 6:45... old mate never showed. Not wanting to leave the bike in the middle of Queanbeyan overnight, I offered to store it for him, now I have a random Ninja in my garage. Hmm.

I ran the plates, no it’s not stolen or encumbered/under finance, I think it’s more a case of the kid being a bit shook up after dropping it.
