Ok hit another milestone, now there's drive to the rear wheels. :) Pretty big releif as I'm seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. This all happen 2 weeks ago. There won't be any updates for a while as I'm on a work trip.
I had the 3" 2 piece tailshaft shortened at both ends. I didn't want to run an adapter on the rear of the gearbox that picks up on the three bolt flange so I ordered a rare GT500 TR6060 output flange from Mal Wood. Since I work at Ford I knew of this option as it was cheaper than the dodgy adapter plates getting around. For the rear end of the tailshaft I knocked off the flange and bolted it directly to the new Strange diff companion yoke.
Difference between the 3 bolt commodore/falcon out flange and the GT500 TR6060 output flange. The GT500 flange had to have 6mm trim off the splined end that goes into the transmission
First half of the tailshaft shortened and mounted. Once I had it mounted I took a measurement and dropped the other half off to the tailshaft joint to b hortened.
Rear half shortened and installed
So now the rear hand brake line had to be tackled. I had been putting this off for a while but finally came up with a way converting it over. If you are looking into swapping in a diff that has balls like a 8.8 then listen in.
First thing you do is get the Explorer hand brake lines into the vice like so. turn the vice grips clockwise so that the coiled steel in the sheath tighten up and reduce diatmeter. This causes the sheaving to fall out of the ends.
You will end up with these. They will allow the cable to clip into the 8.8 diff brake backing plates.
Next you need to revert the crimping so that it can be crimped once again. Do this by pressing in a M12 bolt that has had it's threads ground down to a taper. This allows for the bolt to guide into the cable clip. Having threads will allow you to screw the bolt out.
Cut a slice down the Explorer cable end so that the cable can be extracted. Puth in the volvo cable and build up weld up an over the cable trying not to actually weld the cable.
Install it all into the brake backing plate like so. You probably notice I run the backing plate 180degree so that the cables are down at the bottom. Did this by mistake but it actually works out better clearing the control arms.
Also got the EL swaybar installed. Tip is to use the swaybar mounts from the 70's 244's as they offset the bar lower away from the body rails.
