I've had nothing but trouble recently. Probably my own doing.
I ordered the usual oil and air filters from eBay which work fine, Transgold air filter and either Sakura or Phoenix oil filter. This time though, I got a Transgold fuel filter too, since it was last changed more than 30k kms ago. Trouble is, I think the design of these is backwards compared to the Bosch OEM fuel filters. As a result, i'm pretty sure when I tried to start the car it created a hell of a lot of back pressure which has killed the main fuel pump from the looks of it. (about 50% speculation at this point)
The new filter doesn't have flow direction marked on it. It's a Transgold FI0400, apparently interchangeable with a Ryco Z400. SCA confirm that the FI0400 is their only recommended part for my particular model and engine.
Since changing it, the car won't start. Put the old filter back on, car still won't start.
After the fuel pump(s) run, there is some pressure on both sides of the fuel filter, if I loosen either connector pressurised fuel comes out. Not at crazy pressure though, which I think it needs to be about 40psi or so?
So far i've tried increasing my battery charge even more than usual using jumper leads and my partner's car, after which it will crank like crazy but still not spark. I've checked all the plugs by pulling them out one by one and holding the threaded part against the valve cover, all of them definitely spark. That leaves fuel.
Made a short cable with some spades on either end as was recommended on Dave Barton's site, jumpered fuses 5 and 7 together and both pumps run. The main pump sounds a bit scratchy, but runs for as long as I have it connected. The in-tank pump sounds fine tone-wise, like what you hear in every race car ever, however - the tone stays the same, fairly high pitched for about 10 seconds and then slowly gets deeper until it switches off completely. Not sure if that's because i'm testing it outside the tank but I can reproduce the same thing every time if I disconnect the jumper cable and reconnect it again.
Tonight I spoke to the owner of the 264 I grabbed a bunch of parts from a few weeks back and went back there just now, grabbed the complete in-tank and main pump setups, as well as some other spares.
Tomorrow night i'm going to try swapping the pumps into the 244 and see if it all magically works, hopefully it does. At least this gives me some experience working with this type of problem, but it is a bit irritating nonetheless.
Photos of parts and the busy looking garage
