Wrecking 1974 142

Hi All,

I have retrieved a 142 with intent to restore it, the body however is too far gone so the good bits will be saved and the rusted body off to the recycler.

So far the entire car is here save for those parts reserved:

engine/gearbox/diff/pedal box not available
doors already promised elsewhere
Wheels and hubcaps are not available

Available:
bumpers are ok
seats are ok
lots of chrome is Ok. Some great, some with a little damage
Dash looks fine too, the top is cracked though the rest looks Ok.
Rear windows look Ok, chrome looks good on them.

This will be going to the crusher on Monday, space is my issue right now so it will not be here long.
If parts are desired then the car is in Caulfield, it would be preferable if the parts were pulled by you, I am busy on a 740 project this weekend. Arrangements can be made for me to pull and post so do ask.

If someone want the entire body that can also be arranged. The turret is really good, the bottom parts are a little rusty.

Where's the rust?

I would like the the rear side windows and rubber seal on the body, but am in Tassie. Should only be a minute to remove if you can store them for a few weeks?

The spare wheel well is a common place to rust. It's a common and easy repair.

Trailing edge of the right rear guard is also common, and repairable.

140s and 240s that weren't kept clean enough often have rust in this area too. Rust repairs are common.

The top of the lower windscreen cowling piece would need more inspection, however the RF section of the windscreen is also a common rust point, due to the windscreen clips. I'd be hitting the lower cowling with a wire brush and seeing how bad it is.

This needs further examination, but it looks like it may be a poor past repair and rust under the sealing putty.

That's easily fixed by replacing the front guard.

There doesn't seem to be any rot in the sills or the rear beaver panel.

Given all that, YMMV, but to me, this car looks repairable by somebody with mediocre to good welding and bodywork skills.

The only part that worries me that I can see is the lower windscreen cowling piece. I'd also want to whip off the front guards to see if the body side cowling sections have any rust before declaring it a lost cause.

The story is that it was in a shed for the last 17-ish years. Last rego sticker is 2000.
Problem is it was a shed on Phillip Island, which is close to the salty waters of the ocean.
If someone were a panel beater then it would be salvageable, I am not that person unfortunately.
As said, if someone wants it all then it can be arranged.

Window seals already promised, if no one wants the entire car then the rear windows can be removed and saved for @1971_144GL

Fourth pic down appears to show rust along the rear edge of the bonnet, rather than in the plenum panel.

Well worth saving for somebody by the looks of it, all rust appears to be in typical places and of similar size to other 140's, just slightly more nasty looking due to salty air exposure.

Still looking for someone to take it all and restore it...
It could be a nice little car.
Nothing is promised yet re parts, the whole car minus engine, box, diff and wheels could go together. I can throw in a good auto, a bad auto and a K Jet engine with occasional oil pressure (from a 74 144 - where the other parts are going).

Well, you have advertised it as a wreck, haven't put a price up, and have stipulated a very short timeframe before it is crushed.

Any chance that you could take it back to Phillip Island?

If all else fails you should hang onto the doors and B-C pillar glass, those parts are probably hard to come by for 142 and 242 owners.

I was ill yesterday so not started 142 yet.
@jamesinc - so far they have been the popular parts, doors and rear glass/seals.
I had not see the hub caps before, they are my new favourite thing :-)

@dmc, Xoe has some rust in the same places yours has, and I'm waiting to get a car back from Canberra so I can do some cuts from it for body repair, and then hopefully I an bribe Mister Hortz or Mister Bear to practice the art of Sparks And Liquid Metal. That is an old photo btw.

I wonder if your car was once the recipient of Xoe's original engine and gearbox? Six degrees of seperation and all that. She has a BW35 and a B20A, but the numbers indicate she should have a B20B and an M40. Only thing is that Xoe has a maroon (code 691) interior and yours has brown. But shes getting a 16V and a T5.

Not sure on numbers on either the 142 or 144, Happy to post some pics of plates to the group if they can be de-cyphered and shared.

3 = B20B
3 = RHD normal spec (LHD are either 1, or 2 for California specials)
4 = M40
9 = Oz or Malaysia assembled
A= 1974

The number after the 'A' is the chassis number.
