Hey all,
My car is running like shit and I have no idea why. There is no codes, no engine light.
It started yesterday, just before I got home.
I noticed it was running unusually hot. Water temp was at 107 in traffic, when it usually sits at 105 and then cools down. I didn't think much of it, as it was only 2 degrees.
I went to accelerate and it felt like there was no boost and it wouldn't shift down.
This morning I started the car and it didn't do its usual cat warm up routine, where it sits on 1500rpm for about 30secs. It just started and the revs fell to 750 straight away.
Whilst cold, the car ran normal. It had boost, was downshifting, etc. The only unusual thing was a couple of backfires.
Then in traffic, temps rose quickly again and I had no boost along with no downshifting.
I also noticed temps ranged massively.
Normal operation would see the car sitting on around 90 whilst moving and 105 in traffic. Today, it got to 105 quicker than usual and then dropped to 78 once I was moving.
TLDR:
- car running hotter than usual
- no boost when hot
- no downshifting
- no engine light
- huge range in engine temps
- a couple of backfires
Please help.
I'll be calling my mechanic soon, but just wanted to get thoughts here.

Two codes just came up.
P0CAC
P0004
on my way to mechanics.

You need to tell us what model and year your car is!
cubic25
2011 V50 T5.
I think P0CAC was generic. It's now throwing P005c and p0004.
Mech has his scanner hooked up.
cubic25
Mech thinks it's the cam angle sensor, but can't be sure because his scanner can't test it.
Voldat and Berry are booked out until next year. Bummer.
Might have to just swap it out and see what happens.
cubic25
Also just discovered that the AC won't come on either.

Sounds like time to buy your own Vida and dice unit
cubic25
Tried that. I was hoping to avoid ever going there again.
I have a feeling it is the CEM. A $3K job according to Berry.
VolvoDeger
what area are you at as I could do it for you........
cubic25
Preston.
I'm now at Berry. They were nice enough to squeeze me in. Will update shortly.
VolvoDeger
hopefully pete helps you out say hello to the the boys
cubic25
Who am I saying hello from?
cubic25
Phew! Looks like it was a blown fuse.
Surely it must have happened for a reason though.

Fuse blew again on the way home.
Anyone know a good auto-elec around Preston?
Berry recommend Boomarang Auto Elec in Box Hill. Anyone here used him before?
The codes Berry pulled are:
ECM 421D - Evap value signal low - Oxy sensor disabled
616D - CAM value intake low - short to ground
612D - ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' '' ' ' ' ' ' 'low - Short to ground
630D -A/C relay low - short to ground
600D - TCV value low -Short to ground
122D - MAF flow low - could be faulty MAF
I have a feeling a mouse (we have a mouse issue here), has chewed on the wires leading to the CEM.
EDIT: After calling around, I booked it in with Boomarang Auto Elec for Wednesday next week. He thinks they might have to hold onto it into the new year.....
Anyone got any suggestions for where or how I should look for a fault before then?
Thanks.

I would check the wiring to the tcv if its an aftermarket one relocated to the firewall?
If the 5v supply shorts it screws with the readings of the other sensors. Those codes basically isolate it the engine bay loom
cubic25
I think you might be onto something. I'm not home at the moment, so I can't check, but the CBV was changed the other week. I kept the stock TCV, which means there's no mounting bracket for it like there used to be. I wonder if the mechanic fixed it to anything or if it is just hanging there.....
cubic25
TCV and wiring going to it look fine.
I think I'll just leave it for the auto elec to look for.

The fuse that it is blowing is Fuse 35 in the engine bay fuse box.
I just did a Google search, and it seems like a fairly common Fuse to blow. Problem is, because it controls so many sensors and relays, it's pretty hard to track down a culprit.
I still suspect the TCV, as it is the only thing that has changed recently.
FUSE 35:
2/22 Relay, climate control system
4/46 Engine control module (ECM), 5-Cyl. Diesel
6/67 Fuel leakage control pump, 5-Cyl.
6/99 EGR motor, 1.6l Diesel, 1.8l Gasoline
7/17 Mass air flow sensor (MAF), 5-Cyl. Gasoline, 4-Cyl. Diesel
7/192 Water detection sensor, 4-Cyl. Diesel
8/6-8/9 Injection valves, 1.8l.
8/18 EVAP valve, Gasoline
8/19 Solenoid, variable valve timing, intake, 5-Cyl. Gasoline
8/28 Turbocharger control valve, 2.5l Turbo
8/45 Vacuum valve, variable intake manifold, 1.8l
8/65 Pressure switch, power steering, 1.6l
8/77 Fuel volume control valve, 2.0l Diesel
8/81 Solenoid, variable valve timing, exhaust, 2.5l Turbo
8/82 Solenoid, variable turbo geometry, 4-Cyl. Diesel
8/114 Valve, air/fuel mixing, 1.8l
8/132 Control valve, intake, 2.0l Diesel
9/32 PTC resistor, crankcase ventilation 5-Cyl. Gasoline
So, ruling out parts that don't relate to my car leaves us with:
2/22 Relay, climate control system
6/67 Fuel leakage control pump, 5-Cyl.
7/17 Mass air flow sensor (MAF), 5-Cyl. Gasoline, 4-Cyl. Diesel
8/18 EVAP valve, Gasoline
8/19 Solenoid, variable valve timing, intake, 5-Cyl. Gasoline
8/28 Turbocharger control valve, 2.5l Turbo
8/81 Solenoid, variable valve timing, exhaust, 2.5l Turbo
9/32 PTC resistor, crankcase ventilation 5-Cyl. Gasoline

Maf can and frequently does die on these guys
Or the tcv is dead inside
Vvt is sorta rare as is the pcv but both do happen
