Want opinions on redblock exhaust/muffler

I went to my small local exhaust place, which is 3km down the next street over from my house, and they did it in the spot within a couple of hours. I guess you just have to be lucky.

Best Bet is to find a local shop, and have a chat to them, tell them that you need to have it done in a day and make a booking, dont expect it to be done on the day you 1st meet with them.

It's possible they are having a quite day and can squeeze you in, but that is pretty uncommon

I'm probably going to be around all weekend if you want a hand to fit the headers and 'join' it to the rest of the exhaust.

I get what you're saying. My mustang exhaust was custom made on the day. I watched it being made.

It's no worry to make an appointment. I just wasn't expecting to hear out would take days to do half the job I've seen done in hours.

Cam, on Sunday I'm going bowling with a co-worker around noon but after that I don't have anything on.

Mike said he would come by last week to grab the xc70...n then said he would confirm with me on Friday what time this weekend he'd come by....so I don't have anything else going on

I had magnaflows on some other cars and always enjoyed the sound. I'm trying to find a vendor locally that stocks them and haven't had much luck.

My current plan is to take car to shop, have header installed, cat removed, stock muffler removed, magnaflow added to stock piping (as long as its undamaged) and then maybe a slightly dressier tip. I figure this will be a lot less money and provide the same results.

It'll get rid of the rattle-y, noisy bits, pick up some flow and sound decent while looking a little better.

Magnaflow make various types of mufflers, for what I imagine you're wanting is two muffler and you will have to have a cat as anything after 1986 came fitted with them and any exhaust will not remove a cat and then sting you with the cost of a cat as they are doing the job, so just ask about a high flow cat up front.

Noise is relative I think, my wagon has the ported wastegate and a 3" exhaust going through two muffler and a magnaflow cat and it's not quiet, the only annoying noise is the exhaust leak at the back of the middle muffler due to other issues.

Both my mufflers currently are super-cat which I think are just a more generic muffler but straight through muffler. Most vehicles end up extra loud due to the rear muffler either not being there, or being the wrong size. If you ring around and find a shop that is willing to swap over the middle or rear muffler over for you if it's too loud, then you can adjust the noise to suit.

But with that being said, if you use a muffler that goes across the length of the rear of the 240 like stock, the noise comes out the passenger side and due to there being two mufflers even highflow/straight through 2.25" mufflers you will probably think it's about the same noise as before with slightly more pep as they only gain a max of 10kw with a bigger exhaust n/a. The cheaper mufflers issues compared to a magnaflow or something expensive like that is that the internals can collapse sooner and you will need to change the muffler sooner, though it's not really that common to happen I don't think!

My car is pre-cat, so that would've saved me a few bucks when my exhaust was done. Does the cat make much difference sound wise?

I was unaware the car has two mufflers stock. Maybe I do need the whole thing built from scratch. I'd be very happy to ditch the cat from a cost standpoint if possible but it may not be an option for me.

Right now the hardest part is finding a shop with inventory on hand. I may order a muffler off eBay and take it to them to ensure proper firmament.

My current idea was to run the exhaust down the drivers side, have the muffler running north-South under the cabin and then a tip coming out on front of the rear wheel. Less pipe means less weight.... Should mean less cost as well.

Thoughts?

Also a 100-cell cat is illegal most of the time, but who is ever going to actually emissions-test a Volvo.

Most exhaust shops will try different types of mufflers for you to hear and pick which noise you want, but you will have to wait around. Most places wont bend the system themselves, they will piece it together with pre purchased bends. Not 100% sure but I think 100 cell cats are illegal also, 200 cell is the highest flowing cat you can legally have on a street car, may have changed since I was fitting exhaust's (some years ago). I personally hate the sound of magnaflow mufflers, but that's just my personal taste. Sound will depend on the design of the muffler, straight through will give the best flow but be noisy, baffled will be slightly (fairly negligible on an N/A engine) more restrictive and less noisy. If it was me I would put a resonator up front somewhere and use the biggest straight through muffler I could fit under the back.

They are ripping you off.

I do industrial piping in tube and pipe of all diameters. If i took even half a day to make what constitutes a car exhaust, any fucking car exhaust i would never have work as a contractor or a job working for wages.

I have done some pretty amazing on the run piping jobs under pressure as the paper machine cant stop so you measure,use your guess meter, fabricate and put it in. You dont and cant do any test fitting,you know what you are doing so get it done and keep everyone happy!

These exhaust fitting places are just that,they take off shelf and put it on.
Find one that has a proper fitter and get a quote, if to high,too long tell em their name is now on an internet list of useless shitheads.

If your car had a cat from the factory, it is illegal to not have one. I would think that if you give the exhaust place a weeks notice or something like that, they'd be able to order in the bits that you need? I found the advice from the Bruces very helpful when deciding on what to get for my car.

yeah, all good advice so far. I had a 2.5L Countour (mondeo) V6 with borla exhaust and sounded great. Maybe picking up a single borla muffler and having the rest fabricated would be the way to go. The last magnaflow I had was a turbo-pinto so the turbo probably kept the noise way down.

Shame about the tip having to be behind the wheel...i guess that's to be expected living in a communist country like this...
