So this morning was driving as normal when suddenly became very sluggish , no power , still revving to 4000 but slowly and accelerating even slower , engine system message on, starting boosting again for a few seconds but now it’s shit again , disconnected maf sensor and car continued the same , 2008 model
Any ideas ? @Philia_Bear

Swirl flaps, egr, split turbo hose, lift pump are all possibilties. Anyway you can get the fault codes out of it?
VolvoDeger
Oh my ,,,,,,,,, the great xc90 mystery just don't we love this when it happens.................this could be many a item causing this so you do need to read codes first of all, unless you have a turbo pipe drop off under the car.
Your best to have a look at the pipe to the turbo as the plastic mounts break then pipe is pushed off under boost.
This is the easiest fix of them all after that it gets involved so codes need to be read, the one I am doing at the moment with no power is showing 91% throttle at all times with no change. Saying this check pipe then scan car.

Also weird electrical rattling sound after starting for 2-3 seconds and very lumpy when turning off the ignition

Sounds like the swirl flaps motor or link has failed
morgan
Never heard of swirl flaps , what do they do ?
morgan
@Philia_Bear
Mike can I check these myself and how ?
morgan
Checked and arm is moving as I rev so seems to be working fine , strange electrical/ plasticity rattling seems to be coming from near the maf sensor side
Philia_Bear
You have Vida?
morgan
@Philia_Bear nope
Philia_Bear
your not going to easily figure this out without vida or a really really good scan tool
Philia_Bear
unless its something obvious like fully clogged EGR or failed pipe/hose
morgan
Will check egr tomorrow, hoses very hard to see
VolvoDeger
swirl control will not cause the issue as you can drive it with the arm off, so let me know if when you turn the ignition on or off if you hear a crunching sound like gears grinding....................................maybe this is your noise if so we are on the right track.
morgan
@VolvoDeger , sounds like grinding electrical motor sound
VolvoDeger
So when you do it listen to the throttle unit at the same time if so gears are stripped, need to replace throttle unit first of all.
cheers steve

Egr is nice and clean , no carbon build up @VolvoDeger , where is throttle unit ?
VolvoDeger
throttle and egr bolt on together the throttle is the outer one where the induction pipe clamps on
best to get codes read as well

This is a pic of good gears so I will put up a pic of stuffed gears shortly as about to change one, and the bad part is you can't get gears for them.
