Max - with the Volvo B20 setup, they're not a cross flow head, so leaking carbs put the fuel straight on the exhaust manifold. It's a recipe for disaster if left like that.
Today's adventures:
Okay, so... fitted Torben top cover and flat assembly - it STILL leaked!
Took up Torben's suggestion to add an inline aftermarket fuel filter to maybe drop the pressure a wee bit. Result: same.
Then I had a brain flash.
(Server isn't letting me upload pics today, so I'll use the maker's pic)
This is the replacement fuel pump.
See the big nut on the top?
Well, apparently, it's a pressure adjustment...
I got a socket, thinking 'what harm can it do to turn this thing and see what happens, that car is already cactus if it's leaking fuel so what have I got to lose?' ... and lo and behold, no more leaks!
Lessons learned from this exercise?
1. Torben is a legend, and the Oz Volvo brains trust is awesome.
2. PTZ FPP4400 replacement fuel pumps for B18 / B20 / B30 engines have an adjustable regulator, by means of a nut on top of the pump, unlike the stock pump.
3. Worn parts - i.e. needle and seats - in the float bowls of HS6 carbs will cause fuel to spew out of the breather.
4. Floats are prone to failure, and the float level is ideally set to one-eighth of an inch.
5. Finding SU parts at your local Repco, etc, isn't usually possible; they have to order them in.
6. I have found more reasons to hate carbs.
All I have to do now is collect sway bars from Woop-Woop and get to Yass! Easy!
